Hot on the heels of his ten favorite science fiction films, The Daily Beast has followed up with George R.R. Martin in regards to his ten favorite fantasy movies. Much like the science fiction list, he provides a good basic primer for fantasy films. Although one entry is exceptionally unique.

While Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, and Pan’s Labyrinth are all fairly represented, Martin does deviate from convention to feature to champion the 1946 French film La belle et la bête. Or, as it is more commonly known, Beauty and The Beast. Martin himself was a writer for the early 90’s TV series, and the French adaptation shares some similarities in regards to the cat-not-beast look that the TV show went for. The author mentions this briefly in the article and gives a nice shout out to Ron Perlman’s performance on the show, as well.
