Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Novels of the Decade Reader's Poll
Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Novels of the Decade Reader's Poll

A preliminary sweep of your responses in our Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Novels of the Decade Poll has revealed some early frontrunners. Come see how it’s shaking out below the cut.

At the moment, the voting is a mile wide and an inch deep. So far, the top 9 consists of:

  • Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (15 votes)
  • The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (12 votes)
  • Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (11 votes)
  • Anathem by Neal Stephenson (11 votes)
  • American Gods by Neil Gaiman (10 votes)
  • The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson (9 votes)
  • Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson (9 votes)
  • A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin (9 votes)
  • Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson (7 votes)

Epic fantasy will be tough to beat! Picking up steam are:

  • The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch (6 votes)
  • The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi (6 votes)
  • The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham (6 votes)
  • Perdido Street Station by China Miéville (5 votes)
  • The Scar by China Miéville (5 votes)
  • Blindsight by Peter Watts (5 votes)
  • Spin by Robert Charles Wilson (5 votes)
  • Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan (4 votes)
  • Night Watch by Terry Pratchett (4 votes)
  • Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay (4 votes)
  • The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (4 votes)

It’s early yet, though, and already there’s a big surprise in that the Wheel of Time, a series we expected to dominate the poll is so far too scattered to be making much of a dent.

We’ll do another update on Monday. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds!
