“I have to write a blog for Tor.com’s paranormal month, but I have no idea what to write.” I plopped down on my sister’s bed, my arm draped across my forehead, hoping I looked pathetic enough that she’d help me.

Parisa didn’t even turn around to see my dramatics. She stared into her closet, her gaze intent on its contents. “That’s too bad,” she said absently.

“You look like you’re searching for monsters in there.” Monsters. I pursed my lips. ”Do you think monsters are paranormally?”

“Is ‘paranormally’ a word?”

She grabbed a dress and whirled to face me. “What do you think about this?”

I studied it. Black and white, a pattern reminiscent of zebra stripes. Halter top. Flirty skirt. “I don’t know of any paranormal character who’d wear that. It’s too feminine for Mercy Thompson, it wouldn’t provide enough weapons coverage for Anita Blake, and it’s not slutty enough for Rachel Morgan.”

Parisa frowned. “I’m not saying you should write about it. I mean for me to wear.”

“Where are you going?”

“I have a date.”

“You wouldn’t be going out with a vampire, would you?”

“No, he’s French.”

“Drat. I could have tagged along and asked him questions. Interviews go over so well on blogs.”

“For the record, you’re never allowed to tag along on one of my dates.” She put the dress back and reached for another. “What about this one?”

It was a slinky, short red tube. “It looks like something Jeaniene Frost’s Cat Crawfield would wear.”

My sister rolled her eyes. “Why don’t you write a fashion piece on how popular paranormal characters dress?”

“Like a gossipy, red-carpet piece?” The idea had merit. “Or maybe I could do a Cosmo-esque thing with dos and don’ts for dressing the part of a Jeaniene Frost.”

“That’s an excellent idea,” Parisa said enthusiastically. “But first tell me how you would dress if you were going on a first date.”

“With a vampire, I’d wear a turtleneck. With a shapeshifter, I’d make sure I wore a lot of perfume to mask the scents of my feelings, and with a ghost I would wear anything but a toga.”

“I know better than to ask this, but I can’t help myself. Why wouldn’t you wear a toga?”

“Because he might get offended by the white sheet.” Duh.

As a little girl, Kate Perry dreamt of many things. Like becoming a ninja. Dressing up in black and carrying a big sword? Seemed like a no brainer. However, Fate had other plans for her, and she studied Kung Fu San Soo instead. A Kung Fu Master, Kate now has more weapons than she ever imagined—including several swords.

She lives in San Francisco. Voted by her friends as the woman they’d most want to stroll with down a dark alley, Kate’s as likely to be spotted at the opera as she is doing tai chi in Golden Gate Park. Usually wearing black—in both cases. You can also find her at her website or on Twitter.
