In my in box this morning, I received the news that Nick Gevers has an interesting new project with LOCUS magazine online. The new project is called SF Quintessential, and Gevers will “be talking regularly with influential figures in the field—authors and editors—tying in with the publication of new collections and anthologies, and looking at the state of the magazines. First up is Jonathan Strahan, discussing his superb anthology Eclipse Two. Soon: Lou Anders, on the dynamic Fast Forward 2.”
Gevers has done reviews for LOCUS magazine for years, often focusing on short fiction. He’s also the editor, along with Peter Crowther, of Postscripts magazine. He recently edited a steampunk anthology for Solaris called Extraordinary Engines.
I think Strahan’s a great choice for the first interview. While he’s been editing for many years at this point, he’s not as well known as other editors. The past few years have seen an explosion of work from Strahan. The aforementioned Eclipse series, several volumes of year’s best science fiction and fantasy, the New Space Opera, and are just some of the anthologies that Strahan’s put together in the past three or four years.
In fact, since 2003, Strahan has edited at least 18 anthologies. He was nominated for a Hugo last year, and I expect he’ll win one sooner than later.
The interview was enlightening for me, and I look forward to seeing who else Gevers brings in to chat.
