Yesterday I posted about a new publishing venture, and today I am sad to announce that Wheatland Press, the publisher of the long-running World Fantasy Award-nominated anthology series Polyphony, is going on hiatus from publishing new titles for 2009. From founder and publisher Deborah Layne:
What this means is that I will publish no new books during 2009 (including Polyphony 7). I will continue to fill orders on existing titles and will keep those titles available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.com.
Layne will be at several conventions this year, selling existing titles from the Wheatland catalog. She is going to spend the year looking for new avenues of funding and looks to get back to a regular publishing schedule in 2010.
Polyphony 7, which was initially set to be published in late 2008, is currently off the docket with all of the accepted stories being returned to their respective authors.
Wheatland has always put out great titles (including Bruce Holland Rogers’ World Fantasy Award-winning collection The Keyhole Opera), so I hope this is a hiatus and not an end to a good thing.
In related news, the experimental webzine Farrago’s Wainscot has announced that their first anthology of material publishing online is being cancelled. The book was set to be published by Drollerie Press, but has been cancelled due to budgetary reasons.
