Legendary is talking to the hand(s)…of Danny and Michael Philippou, the directing duo behind the buzzy horror film Talk To Me (a movie about an evil disembodied hand wreaking havoc on some teenagers, in case you were wondering why the heck I started out this post with a weird hand reference).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmakers are in final negotations with Legendary about taking on a feature adaptation of Street Fighter, the immensely popular 1980s arcade game from Capcom that spawned an entire franchise of characters making each other dead and bloody in myriad ways (see above for one of the more recent iterations).
We sadly don’t have any details yet on what the specific focus of the film will be or even what characters will be in it. We do know, however, that this will be the third attempt at a Street Fighter film, and comes after the objective failures of the 1994 flick starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia and the 2009 20th Century Fox feature, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. [ed note: but we all know there’s only one truly great Street Fighter adaptation.]
The potential deal makes me all the more eager to check out Talk to Me when it premieres in theaters around the U.S. on July 28 (it debuted in Sundance to rave reviews). No news yet on when Street Fighter will make it to production. The project doesn’t even have a writer attached yet, however, so it will be awhile, folks.
