Inland is a movie from writer-director Fridtjof Ryder that stars Mark Rylance. It’s described as a “modern folktale” that—if the trailer is any indication—is creepy as all heck.

The clip above starts with a disturbing voice saying, “My mother said. I never should. Play with the fairies in the wood.” Can anyone say these words in a more creepy way than this person does? I don’t think so.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis:

Inland is a modern folktale that explores the fractured identity of a young man after the mysterious disappearance of his mother. Guided by a father figure (Rylance) and old friends who care deeply, his journey through the dreamlike spaces of rural England brings him face to face with the loss that haunts him in ways he could never have anticipated.

I’m not the only one disturbed by Inland. “This film wakes me at night. It contains a very old connection to the Green Man rituals of Carnivale, when someone would dress up as the Green Man and emerge from the deep forest to rampage through the town,” Rylance said in a statement to Variety. “This version is really scary and powerful, as it should be. There is a beautiful expression of the unconscious energy of nature in man. It reminds me of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet and films I loved but don’t see many of any more.”

In addition to Rylance the film stars Rory Alexander (Pistol), Kathryn Hunter (Andor), Eleanor Holliday, Alexander Lincoln (The Fence), Nell Williams (The Good Liar) and Shaun Dingwall (Top Boy). It’s produced by Henry Richmond, Louis Paine and Fridtjof Ryder in association with Twenty 20 Media, Fablemaze, Fatcontman, Dva Films, Shakespeare Road and Zebrafish Media.

Inland debuted at 2022’s BFI London Film Festival and premieres in theaters on June 16, 2023.
