Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Project in the Works; No News If Keanu Reeves or Idris Elba Will Reprise Roles

The popular video game Cyberpunk 2077 has already grown beyond the original story put out by CK Projekt Red, the developer that’s also behind The Witcher games. In addition to an expansion pack, there’s also a board game and a novel set in the world written by Rafał Kosik. Just like The Witcher, however, Cyberpunk 2077 will soon be expanding into the live-action realm.

CD Projekt Red announced that the game’s creative team is working with Anonymous Content (whose leadership worked on shows like True Detective, Westworld, and True Blood) to develop a live-action story set within the franchise’s dystopian universe. Whether that story takes the form of a series or a feature film, however, is unclear.

The original Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person action roleplaying game that takes place in the sprawling urban jungle of New City, a crime-ridden place where body modifications are the status quo. Gamers take on the role of V, a mercenary searching for an implant that could potentially make someone immortal. Keanu Reeves is in the game as the ghost of Johnny Silverhand, a former rock star/war vet who supposedly died in 2023. The game also had an expansion pack, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty come out in September, where Reeves reprised his role and Idris Elba joined the franchise as a secret agent named Solomon Reed (pictured above).

This live-action project is still in its very early days—they’re currently looking for a writer for the script—so there’s little known about what it will contain, though CD Projekt Red says it will be “a brand-new story.” Whether that story has at least a cameo from Reeves and/or Elba is unknown for now. And given the development stage the project is in, it will likely be a couple of years before we see it on the screen.
