BOOK ONE

‘HE WAS A SOLDIER’

I am known
in the religion of rage.
Worship me as a pool
Of blood in your hands.
Drink me deep.
It’s bitter fury
that boils and burns.
Your knives were small
but they were many.
I am named
in the religion of rage.
Worship me with your
offhand cuts
long after I am dead.
It’s a song of dreams
crumbled to ashes.
Your wants overflowed
but now gape empty.
I am drowned
in the religion of rage.
Worship me unto
death and down
to a pile of bones.
The purest book
is the one never opened.
No needs left unfulfilled
on the cold, sacred day.
I am found
in the religion of rage.
Worship me in a
stream of curses.
This fool had faith
and in dreams he wept.
But we walk a desert
rocked by accusations,
where no man starves
with hate in his bones.

CHAPTER ONE

If you never knew
the worlds in my mind
your sense of loss
would be small pity
and we’ll forget this on the trail.
Take what you’re given
and turn away the screwed face.
I do not deserve it,
no matter how narrow the strand
of your private shore.
If you will do your best
I’ll meet your eye.
It’s the clutch of arrows in hand
that I do not trust
bent to the smile hitching my way.
We aren’t meeting in sorrow
or some other suture
bridging scars.
We haven’t danced the same
thin ice
and my sympathy for your troubles
I give freely without thought
of reciprocity or scales on balance.
It’s the decent thing, that’s all.
Even if that thing
is a stranger to so many.
But there will be secrets
you never knew
and I would not choose any other way.
All my arrows are buried and
the sandy reach is broad
and all that’s private
cools pinned on the altar.
Even the drips are gone,
that child of wants
with a mind full of worlds
and his reddened tears.
The days I feel mortal I so hate.
The days in my worlds,
are where I live for ever,
and should dawn ever arrive
I will to its light awaken
as one reborn.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Cotillion drew two daggers. His gaze fell to the blades.

The blackened iron surfaces seemed to swirl, two pewter rivers oozing across pits and gouges, the edges ragged where armour and bone had slowed their thrusts. He studied the sickly sky’s lurid reflections for a moment longer, and then said, ‘I have no intention of explaining a damned thing.’ He looked up, eyes locking. ‘Do you understand me?’

The figure facing him was incapable of expression. The tatters of rotted sinew and strips of skin were motionless upon the bones of temple, cheek and jaw. The eyes held nothing, nothing at all.

Better, Cotillion decided, than jaded scepticism. Oh, how he was sick of that. ‘Tell me,’ he resumed, ‘what do you think you’re seeing here? Desperation? Panic? A failing of will, some inevitable decline crumbling to incompetence? Do you believe in failure, Edgewalker?’

The apparition remained silent for a time, and then spoke in a broken, rasping voice. ‘You cannot be so . . . audacious.’

‘I asked if you believed in failure. Because I don’t.’

‘Even should you succeed, Cotillion. Beyond all expectation, beyond, even, all desire. They will still speak of your failure.’

He sheathed his daggers. ‘And you know what they can do to themselves.’

The head cocked, strands of hair dangling and drifting. ‘Arrogance?’

‘Competence,’ Cotillion snapped in reply. ‘Doubt me at your peril.’

‘They will not believe you.’

‘I do not care, Edgewalker. This is what it is.’

When he set out, he was not surprised that the deathless guardian followed. We have done this before. Dust and ashes puffed with each step. The wind moaned as if trapped in a crypt. ‘Almost time, Edgewalker.’

‘I know. You cannot win.’

Cotillion paused, half turned. He smiled a ravaged smile. ‘That doesn’t mean I have to lose, does it?’

Good to see Karsa and Paran are returning to the game, not to mention Nimander. I did not expect Apsalara to return to him there, but I'm happy with the prospect none the less. Now we just need to other Apsalar to show up.

...now if he only could give us the other 890 pages as additional reading samples, then I could wait in peace for the book to arrive...

Good to see Karsa and Paran are returning to the game

I am busting my brains here, because even after rereading the 10 pages, I cannot find any reference to Karsa whatsoever...
Not that I am not happy enough with Ganoes, but I fear the very big fella is sitting this one out...

I will now stop rereading DG, finish RG asap (I am close to the end), skip TTH and make damn well sure I have reread DoD before this book gets delivered!

I think ZetaStriker is referring to the part where 'somebody's mind got similar to that of a dog after getting struck, and he stayed loyal' part.

I had to read that part a couple of times too, because it reminded me of Karsa's friend in early HoC also; the fact that we finally see Calm again might have added to that...

Awesome! Vertical ocean of Light as a gate sealed with countless Liosan souls - awesome imagery! Tantalizing hints on origin of the Crippled God (Father Light? Father Light's servant? Confusing!) being connected to the Liosan - awesome implications for their enmity with the Assail. Calm returns! Icarium is ... uh ... alive? Mael's corpsey gift to Krul - Quick Ben? So much awesome.

It looks like there's some formatting funkery in the transitions from Tiste Liosan to Kaminsod's monologue and from Paran to Karsa. Took me a while to parse what was going on in both instances.

Anyway, it's all just gravy six ways from Sunday. I've missed Ganoes sorely, and I'm excited to see Karsa's apparent involvement (after rumors that he wouldn't be cropping up next until ICE's Darujhistan book.) Someone's gonna kill a god, indeed!

Oh, what I wouldn't give to have had the Dramatis Personae included in this snippet though. . .

Wow, I was so confused there; it's formatting issues. But now I understand that the Karsa bit is actually a separate section. So he's still outside Darujhistan. (For a while there I was thinking Paran was in Darujhistan which made no sense.) OK then. Will have to re-read the Crippled God section too, with this funky section break format in mind.

Edit: Still confusing - Is the Crippled God Father Light's servant?

Holy H Christ - Samar Dev caved in!!!!!! Karsa finally gets some after 6 books, and he never evn had to revert to his raping ways - nothing like death and giref to fuel the flames of passion eh .....

Ganoes - what the hell is he doing wagering with Shadowthrone?? Does he think he's Quick Ben now ....

Calm!! - chains, bones, chains of bones, bones of chains ...... errr BAD ASS....

Udinaas - the person i love to hate most!!

Cotillion - you arrogant B******d!!, Love itttttt

Um, I think I may be too dumb to read this series. I was wondering what the heck you guys were raving about because I only read the first page. BUT THERE ARE 10 PAGES!!! I was already thinking it was awesome based on one page, but now...no words!

That was something else, so much happening and so many more questions! I can't even begin to imagine how epic the last convergence will be. So excited!

Yipes stripes! My brain is a sieve- and I know I've read the whole series. Couldn't remember a lot of characters . I'll have to do a lot of re-reading before I can open up this book. It sounds like a winner.

This is amazing. I was sceptical after DoD wasnt exactly my favourite book, but this build up sounds epic in every way :-)

In the Mael/K'rul conversation we have:

‘Me with mine, you with yours, his with his, and yet still we fail to convince the world of its inherent absurdity.’

K’rul shrugged. ‘Him with his. Yes. Odd that of all the gods, he alone discovered this mad, and maddening, secret. The dawn to come . . . shall we leave it to him?’

Any thought on who the 'Him' is?
Chris Hawks
31. SaltManZ
@shalter: Someone on the forums suggested the pairings were gods and their chosen mortal companions. So Mael/Tehol, K'rul/Kruppe, and maybe...ST/Pust?
Chris Hawks
32. SaltManZ
And I gotta say, those Malazan armies sure like to go renegade, don't they?

So. Paran. What a stud.......... but where is he........... two skeletal figures.... Assail?..... Tavore is going to be vs. ..... Assail....? Remember all the *orphan children* in DoD......? So.... where is Paran... really....... Did he pull some deck master mumbo-jumbo to have him and his host move to Tavore's destination....? Which is why they are under siege by Assail...? So that's what Shadowthrone is wondering Paran has faith about...? Because Tavore and Ganoes never were close... but is that what the faith is all about...?

I am ecstatic for this final brush stroke, for this epic series that has replaced many of my favorites in authors and books.

No, I believe Paran is still where he was; on the Seven Cities continent, laying siege to Felisin the Younger's cult of the Crippled God. I'm just not sure who the two people he cannot beat are that he's waiting to emerge from within.
Chris Hawks
39. SaltManZ
Zeta @38:

Paran's likely on Kolanse fighting against the Forkrul Assail. He mentions the "Shriven" and the "Watered"; do a Google Books search for "dust of dreams" shriven; the Shriven include the children of the Snake; likely slaves of the FA. The Watered could be FA/human half-breeds.
David Thomson
40. ZetaStriker
Ah, you're right. I was thinking it was part of the terminology they used for the different types of diseased boys that they had in Felisin's little palace, but hadn't gone back to check. So I'm guessing the Forkrul Assail in question are the two that survived Dust of Dreams then?

@SaltMan Z @ 39

No Ganoes must clearly be in Seven Cities because Shadowthrone says that he is in Aren. So still Seven Cities - doens't mean that he will stay there though.
Gerd Kochem
46. Kah-thurak
@45
You should read that part again I guess... ST said he was in Aren. I am also pretty sure that at the end of The Bonehunters it is clearly stated, that the Host left Seven Cities never to return.
Chris Hawks
47. SaltManZ
@ 45/46: Yeah, ST says
'You sit with the Host in Aren, defying every imperial summons. And then you assault the Warrens with this. You should have seen the Emperor’s face!'

Seems clear this is all past tense. The Host is now wherever the "assault on the Warrens" took them.

"He glanced to his left, but the shadow was gone.
A crash from the courtyard below drew him round. The throne, a mass of flames, had broken through the mound beneath it. And the smoke leapt skyward, like a beast unchained."

Is that the throne of the First Empire?

@40
I think the two that survived DoD were of the Watered if we take that that means a FA/human hybrid. These two in the passage I think would be the pures mentioned by Calm, mostly because:

"The man bit something that made him wince. ‘What I mean is, sir, no one’s denying you got talents and such, but those two commanders over there, well, if they get tired of throwing Watered and Shriven against us – if they just up and marched themselves over here, in person, well . . . that’s what I meant, sir.’ "

This suggests that they could literally destroy whatever resistance Paran has personally. This is more along the lines of what we have read about FA then the survivors in DoD who were more human and less personally-ends-a-segie.

@BDG91 I think those 2 are FAs, and sure they can probably walk over and do lots of damage. But Paran probably have sappers that can blow those FAs. Even dragon/eleints are weak against munitions.

@48 Sanctume

He suddenly cackled. ‘You should have seen the Emperor’s face! And the names he called you, my, even the court scribers cringed!’

With the above quote it would make sense...
When it comes to the FA, I've always found myself wanting more in ways of a 3rd-person view of them. I'm also interested to see how the KC fit into the picture. OH.. and what about what happened in that KC structure out in the middle of the desert...
