Robot Roll Call: RiffTrax Live in August!

Genevieve Valentine

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (known to fans, and fans of initials, as MST3K) is a much-mourned TV show that was the scourge of bad SF movies the world over. After its cancellation in 1999, latter-season host Michael Nelson and other MST3K staff writers founded RiffTrax, a web-based riff-generating machine, where customers can download audio tracks to go with their (least) favorite recent movies, as well as full downloads of a truly staggering collection of public-domain shorts that together paint a picture of our horrifyingly upbeat and brainwashing national past. (That’s a story for a different column.)

The problem with downloads is that watching an MST3K episode alone is never as funny as watching it with friends. RiffTrax must know it, too, because Nelson, Kevin Murphy (voice of Tom Servo), and Bill Corbett (latter-season voice of Crow), are bringing a live RiffTrax to the big screen this summer.

On August 20, the terrible trio will be riffing Plan 9 From Outer Space (YES!) live from Nashville, Tennessee. It will be simulcast to movie theatres across the United States. (Thanks to opera for starting that trend! SF nerds will take it from here.) Once you've calmed down from your fannish high, you can search for participating theatres and to purchase tickets.

No matter which host was your favorite (and it’s a fight of West Side Story proportions), a chance to see a riff for the first time ten years after the show was cancelled hints that the online fandom is alive and well, but in reality, it means only one thing: Mike Nelson got all eight thousand of my fan letters, and he listened.

Below, one of the most chilling of the classic MST3K shorts, in which you are instructed how to eat dinner with your family. Hint: never open your mouth.

This really isn't the first time in ten years. Cinematic Titanic, which features a lot of other MST3K alums, just did a bunch of live shows again, and both it and Rifftrax have been going strong for a few years. (To say nothing of Nelson, Murphy and Corbett's Film Crew series.)

@ FCoppersmith I didn't realize Cinematic Titanic did live shows! (Never followed them; was a Mike fan all the way.) Have you been? Were they good?

I am a huge fan of the RiffTrax guys, but I've wanted them to do a broadcat/movie/live show for a long time, and I think this is their first one...? (She said, totally not sure what's even real any more!)

@ GlValentine:

I've had the pleasure of going to a live Cinematic Titanic show, and it was indeed highly entertaining. ^_^ Plus all five of the CT crew hung around after and were very sociable and signed things as well; my partner and our housemate and I got our picture taken with Joel.

I've been regularly buying all of the CT DVD releases as well, and that's been fun too. I particularly like that they're giving you the option of buying either a physical DVD with packaging if you want it, or, if you sign up for the EZTakes download service, you can buy DRM-free DVD images of the movies and burn them down to DVD yourself as many times as you like.

But it's cool that RiffTrax is going to try a live thing as well, especially with a stinker like Plan 9! :)

Sadly, I missed out the recent CT live show, although I know some people who attended and enjoyed the Philadelphia shows.

I'm also partial to Mike over Joel (and, if pressed, Bill Corbett over Trace Beaulieu), but they're all putting out some quality work.

We have done several live shows, the first few of which were at various venues in California. We're not as well-traveled as Cinematic Titanic is, but I thought I'd let you all know that this is not our first venture into the "live riff" realm, either. :)

Hope to see some of you there! (Or at least, to see you through the movie screen...)

Erik @ 5: Thanks for the correction and I and my household will definitely attend the August simulcast in Seattle. It sounds like great fun! :)

Rifftrax has also done some live-over-the-web streaming events—some free, some paid.

I am so looking forward to this theatrical event. I've already got my ticket reserved.
