My first intro to Terry Pratchett (Sir Pratchett) was the first couple of DiscWorld books. Just loved the "cosmology" and magic combined with humor — even this REH sword&sorcery fan was won over.

Please enter me for one if the galleys.

THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET— Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Pratchett isn’t just funny, Pratchett is transcendent." No kidding. My husband has never read these books but knows that I love them. He'll tell our friends that if they like British humor, they should read Pratchett because I reccommend it. But he just doesn't understand that the depths of these books are not just "humor." There is a complex depth that just can't be encapsulated in "funny." THUD was not "funny." Hogfather was not "funny." They were moving and used humor as a conveyance.
