Travel Light Sweepstakes!

Where might I have gone if, instead of a middle-aged Hobbit enamored of his pantry, I had embraced a girl who lost three homes before choosing the open road?”

This is Amal El-Mohtars question in Crossroads and Coins: Naomi Mitchinson's Travel Light, a recent piece on NPR that explores Mitchinson's unjustly forgotten fairy tale about Halla, a girl born to but cast out by a king, who lives among bears  and dragons and princesses. Though Mitchinson was a contemporary of Tolkien's and was one of the first readers of The Lord of the Rings, her work is not nearly as well known, and Amal remarks upon the strangeness of having made it through three English degrees without having heard of her more than 90 books.

We want to rectify that fact by sending five lucky winners a copy of Travel Light by Naomi Mitchinson from Small Beer Press, so that you can explore the intrigues of the Holy Roman Empire and journey to the heart of Constantinople with Halla.

I'm very excited to have heard about this writer for the first time through the NPR article and this post! It's insanely cool of you to do this giveaway, and I'm thrilled to enter. Just knowing that a press is printing her books when my initial researches indicated she was entirely out of print is excellent news, but you went the extra mile and are giving copies away! How cool are you!?

I'm very curious about this author. My skepticism leads me to think that it could be her style is difficult to read and not some other reason why she is not more widely read. I'm curious enough to get this and share with my 12 year old who is an avid reader (but am I too late? She has already read Tolkien).

How DID Constantinople get the works?

Honestly, an English major missing an author with 90+ books doesn't surprise me. I don't mean that as a slight against the discipline, let me say first. I spent 8+ years working in a used/rare bookshop and one of the remarkable things I learned from that is how easy it is for prolific authors and popular books to just vanish from the cultural consciousness. Thorne Smith's back catalog is desperately overdue for a reissuing, just to name one. As well as James Tiptree Jr. And how did everyone forget Geoffrey Kerr's Under the Influence, a novel about a man who can read minds when he's drunk? And this is just the stuff that's in English, who knows what amazing works there are from other languages that never even got translated into English?

Also seriously: someone get Tiptree back into print!
