Man of Steel Screenwriter Talks Justice League and Wonder Woman Movies

Man of Steel David S. Goyer Reddit AMA best answers Justice League movie Zack Snyder Christopher Nolan Wonder Woman movie

David S. Goyer, screenwriter for Man of Steeltook to Reddit’s r/IAmA subreddit last night to discuss the high stakes facing DC’s Superman reboot. Unlike other celebrities who treat Reddit’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread as an online press conference and push their projects without personality, Goyer demonstrated an actual understanding of Reddit’s community and the DC fandom with engaging—and even snarky—answers. When some Redditors teased him about whether he could dodge any questions about the rumored Justice League adaptation, he responded, “Dude, I can dodge Justice League until the end of this AMA.”

But Reddit eventually wore him down.

You know it’s gonna be a good AMA when this is the answer he gives to the debate of Batman vs. Blade:

“Batman would kick the shit out of Blade. I mean, come on. Given a head start and some planning, Batman might even be able to take down Superman. Seriously, are you REALLY asking that question?????”

Despite basically everyone’s fears that director Zack Snyder will screw up Man of Steel, Goyer is enthusiastic about the final product. Like, to an extent that doesn’t sound like studio PR:

“Zack did an incredible job on MOS. Chris[topher Nolan] and I were both blown away by what he did. I am very proud to be associated with what he’s come up with.”

That said, he acknowledged the monumental pressure on this movie to succeed, following the Dark Knight trilogy (which he developed the story for) and Marvel’s The Avengers:

“Sure, there’s a ton of pressure surrounding Man of Steel. WB has a lot riding on it - not just the Superman franchise, but the future of DC movies. More importantly, I think Zack, myself, Henry [Cavill] — we just really want to give the fans the Superman film they deserve. The kind of Superman film I dreamed about making since I saw the first [Richard] Donner film. I HOPE people like it as much as we do. Knock on wood.”

As for comics influences, Goyer said that they drew from writer/artist John Byrne’s rebooting of the Krypton mythos in 1986. Alan Moore’s contributions to the canon (Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?) also played a part, as did Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns’ work.

Redditors wanted to know how Goyer would approach certain members of the Justice League if they were to get individual movies. I like the way he addressed Wonder Woman, because he touched upon the current issues but also pointed out how far we’ve come since Batman Begins in 2005:

“I think Wonder Woman is a very difficult character to crack. More difficult than Superman, who is also more difficult than Batman. Also, a lot of people in Hollywood believe that it’s hard to do a big action movie with a female lead. I happen to disagree with that. But that tends to be the prevailing wisdom. Hopefully, that’ll change in the next few years. Who should play [her]? No idea...”

As for how he would do Green Lantern?

Finally, he could avoid the Justice League elephant in the room no longer. It seems to be only a matter of time, since DC saw how successful The Avengers was for Marvel. Of course, that all depends on getting the right cast and crew. Goyer wouldn’t confirm rumors that he and Nolan would team up on the movie, but he did offer this:

“In order for a Justice League film to happen, MOS has to be successful. That’s up to you guys and about 80 million other people. ;)”

As a bonus, he also mentioned his unfilmed Neil Gaiman adaptation! When asked about his best screenplay that hasn’t been turned into a movie yet, he mentioned this interesting little project:

“I think my best unfilmed script so far is my adaptation of Murder Mysteries, the Neil Gaiman story. So far, it’s been tough to get the financing because it’s ‘arty’, but also requires at least $40 million or so. Fingers crossed we’ll get there soon.”

As far as I’m concerned, Goyer can come back to Reddit anytime. Hopefully he’ll do another AMA before Man of Steel’s release on June 14th, and maybe drag Nolan and/or Snyder along with him.

I'm so tired of this "WW is a hard nut to crack"

No, it's not. Her origin is no more outlandish than any other, her costume is no more outrageous than any other, her power's are no crazier than any other. It's just she keeps being put into the hands of people who don't want to make a Wonder Woman movie, they want Superman w/tits.

And DC will never make a Justice League movie(nor should they get to) until they can get Wonder Woman right. While I'm glad Goyer wants to, I don't have much faith in it. I'd rather Snyder give it a shot. Sucker Punch may have been pretty bad(I like it on a meta level), but he at least demonstrated a desire to probe into opressions women face, which I think would make for a fascinating WW story.

Couldn't agree more Aeryl. I cannot wait until that movie gets in the hands of someone who actually wants it to be about Wonder Woman.

What makes a WW movie hard is that if they dont do it right itll be seen as a failure of female superheros to lead a franchise not that it was a bad movie therefore it failed. But really thats not the reason they arent making a WW movie. Its because the execs dont think their "core male audience" will go watch a movie with a female lead, which is nonsense what man or woman who go to see batman and superman films arent going to go see a WW film?

MOS will be awesome. Only the nit pickers will drag it down. What I'm tired of hearing is that a Justice League movie, if its made, will be about 50 years from now at the rate things are going. Why is a JL movie even being discussed when there is so much work to do with a Flash film, a WW film, a Batman reboot, a GL2 and the possiblity of other characters coming to the big screen? After MOS, DC and Warner Bros. better jump to it. Otherwise you'll be comaparing Avengers to a JL film in the year 2062, which won't be much of a comparison.

I'd like to see a cross between Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone with maybe a dash of Noomi Rapace from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo( original). Realistic, tough background, everygirl. Not necessarily hyper violent, just everyday gritty. WW has been rewritten a few times so why not take creative license and do something classy? Hold off on the bizarre mythical orgins stuff, downplay the supernatural powers and save the invisible jet for WW5. Get Tina Turner to do a cameo.

How can hollywood think its too hard to do an action movie with a female lead?! Hello! One word.....Underworld!! And they had sequels all of which were box office hits. Kate Beckinsale (though a tiny little thing) would be a great wonder woman!!! She's got the looks, the fight action experience, the mysterious side and certainly is one chick you wouldn't want to start a fight with!!! Plus she's not some bimbo actress that I am sure most MEN in Hollywood would look for. She's actually classy and all woman!!! Where are the women producers and directors in Hollywood. They'd be able to pull it off unlike these scared boys!

I am getting sick and tired of Warner brothers and their stupid creative team ( with the exception of goyer, Snyder, Nolan, and anybody else who actually cares ) these people put no love into their work if it were up to me DC should just split into its own studio, it's been 50 years and we still haven't gotten a Wonder Woman or a flash movie! Marvel is introducing quicksilver, our first look at a speedster! And flash hasn't even begun production, the people who don't care at warner brothers should just quit and yes im looking at you Geoff johns, for not helping make green lantern an awesome movie, thus far marvel has been creative and fearless to adapt their comic book movies and it turned out successful.

I agree Paula Patton would be the perfect Wonder Women, if you don't think so, then maybe you need to check her out in Mission Impossible.
