Gaming Roundup: The Empire Strikes Back

Gaming Roundup: The Empire Strikes Back

File this one in the “Well, that was predictable” category. There are heavy rumblings in the gamingverse that Microsoft is set to unveil the Xbox 720 sometime in the near future. While the gaming giant is currently playing it coy, IGN did a little digging and discovered the registration of a few potential Xbox event websites, to which Microsoft declined to respond. Community scuttlebutt pegs the big reveal to be happening sometime in April.

While this is an obvious counterpunch to Sony’s recent unveiling of the PlayStation 4, word has it Sony’s presentation got Microsoft’s full attention. Xbox Love programming director Larry Helb even fired a shot across the bow, tweeting “Announce a console without actually showing a console? That’s one approach.” Trashtalking aside, it will be interesting to see what Microsoft will bring to the table. We took a look at some leaked plans in this space last year, which offered up a few tantalizing (if true) details, including a $299 price point, an included Kinect, and full 3D and Blu-ray support. If the price point rumor holds true, Microsoft may have a serious leg up on the PS4’s purported $429 base price, but at this stage, all is but conjecture. We’ll check back in on the next-gen console war as details continue to emerge.

In other gaming news this week, Diablo III hits the PS3, Dishonored gets a new DLC, and Assassin’s Creed IV takes on pirates.

  • GameStop has had a look at EA’s latest offering in the Battlefield series, and their reports are glowing. In a word, WOW. Direct quote. No news yet on what hardware platform they viewed the game, but the timing seems awfully coincidentally timed with the recent next-gen console announcements.
  • Curious as to what Diablo III looks like on the PlayStation 3? Have a gander at a few screenshots, including a new console-focused Inventory screen.. Sounds like everything currently in the PC version will be coming over to the PS3. Blizzard will have more to say on the subject at PAX East this year.
