Hobbit Fans—Now You Can Drink Ale at The Green Dragon, Too

Replica of The Green Dragon pub from The Lord of the Rings emerges in New Zealand.

What is this new devilry? Well, since New Zealand has been cashing all their tourism chips at the Lord of the Rings Bank (we can hardly blame them), there’s a new pub in town now: The Green Dragon. So the only question we actually have is—can we come barefoot?

We can, right?

The pub opened last month, and is located in the same place where the movies were filmed, near Matamata. We know this is a trap for fans, but it’s a trap that we’ll happily fall face first into if we ever end up in New Zealand some day. Because, you know, it’s the Green Dragon. The home of “the only brew for the brave and true.” Merry and Pippin sang so.

Stubby the Rocket is the Tor.com mascot, and is astonished that beer comes in pints.

And the bartender is wearing a shirt and tie?

I love the confusion where someone who knows a good angle on a strange subculture builds something (say, a really cool repro middle earth bar) but the people who run it are complete f'in' pinks who think "Why...lets spruce this place up with a bartender in a shirt and tie and some bottles of local wine! People will love that!.

Not a ceramic beer mug in site.

Epic Fail.

I second that agreement. Beautiful building promising a unique atmosphere, but the bartender getup delivers an entirely contrary impression.

I'll take a half pint of cider, please.

Yeah, I wouldn't make the bartenders be in costume per se, but the business look with black tie's not working. A dress code that's just not uniform may be most appropriate.

I'd better be able to get a full pint.

I went to visit the movie set back in January 13. There was no bartender with a tie. Mostly young folks worked there dressed in plaid shirts and jeans. I tried the cider, it was pretty tasty. Anyways, it is part of the movie set tour. You walk around Hobbiton and end at the Green Dragon with a drink of your choice. The place looks just like it does in the movies.

If you plan on going, arrive very early in the morning. The lines are insane around lunch to the end of the day. It really ruins the atmosphere with too many people.
