Steampunk Events for October 2012

Steampunk Events for October 2012

Autumn has settled in to roost, and you know what that means: layers! Steampunks can strut their stuff for the new season at a variety of events this month. Watch a musical at the 92nd Street Y performed by The Lisps. Scare up some fun at SteamCon IV, the oldest running steampunk convention in the United States, or celebrate everything Jules Verne at a festival dedicated solely to him in Paris! All these events and more have been gathered up with the help of Kevin Steil, the Airship Ambassador and our guest contributor Simon Berman of Privateer Press.

Folks who want to see their events posted here can contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I’ll be taking November events between now until October 15th. And feel free to signal-boost yours in the comments thread too!

The Airship Ambassador recommends:

OctopodiCon - October 5th -7th - Oklahoma City, OK
This steampunk convention is named after the eight subsections the con is divided in, making sure that whether you’re a maker, writer, artist, costumer, or a fan you’ll be able to find everything you’d want. Featured guests include Professor Elemental, Dr. Grymm, Peter Pixie, Tom Smith, and Ay-leen the Peacemaker.

Futurity, a steampunk musical performed by The Lisps - Oct 6th – New York, NY

Written by Lisps founding member César Alvarez with the band, Futurity tells the story of Julian Munro, a Union soldier in the Civil War who is an aspiring inventor. As the war rages around him, he and the brilliant mathematician Ada Lovelace attempt to invent a steam-powered thinking machine.

Steampunk Celebration at the Festival Jules Verne -  Oct 11th - Grand Rex, Paris, France

From the website: “The Steampunk Celebration is an international event bringing together designers: “steampunk”-talented and inventive. For the past 20 years, JULES VERNE ADVENTURES joins the ROCKET STEAM to celebrate all the heirs of Jules Verne: explorers of today, but the dreamers who reinvent the past and futuristic machines steam, that civilization STEAMPUNK! The event brings together the most dashing of “steam trains” for a parade at the Grand Rex in the gala of the Festival!”

Simon recommends:

Steamstock - Oct 7th - Richmond, CA

Why Simon recommends this: “The first major steampunk music festival featuring awesome and noteworthy musicians like Vernian Process, Frenchy and the Punk, as well as many others. The founders of this event have serious bonafides in the steampunk scene, so this promises to be a great time.” [Note from Ay-leen: Other artists include Thomas Dolby, Abney Park, Frenchy & the Punk, Lee Presson & the Nails, and many more!]

Steamcon IV - Oct 26th - 28th - Bellevue, WA

Why Simon recommends this: “Steamcon’s theme this year is ‘Victorian Monsters’ and they have an amazing line up of guests including cello-rockers Rasputina and artist Joe Benitez. As well, I’m personally looking forward to hosting the surgically-themed Unhallowed Metropolis Antique Cocktail Party open bar for all those 21 and older.”

Retrofuturists Ball 3: Project Bedlam - October 26th - Preston, United Kingdom

Why Simon recommends this: “Promising themes of madness, Victorian asylums, and undoubtedly strong drink and loud music, who could resist partying with the steampunks of the Northern UK?” Facebook Event.

About our guest contributor: Simon Bermanis a staff writer at Privateer Press where he works on the award-winning miniatures wargames Warmachine and Hordes, as well as the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying Game. In his spare time he contributes to Unhallowed Metropolis, the gas-mask chic role-playing game of Neo-Victorian horror, as well as co-administrates Steampunk on Facebook. Simon lives on Capitol Hill in Seattle, likes beer, and tweets about it @godsawayonbsns.

Additional steampunk events:

Steampunk Interactive Mystery at the Saint Anthony Park Library - Oct. 6th - Saint Paul, MN

The Red Ribbon Society presents an interactive steampunk mystery. Players will read the daily paper for information, move through sets, gather clues, and interview characters to solve the mystery. Players are welcome to come in costume, as a character, or as themselves. This branch of the Saint Paul library system was built in 1917, and should serve as a great venue for roleplaying.

Steampunk at Speedwell – Oct 6th – 7th – Morristown, NJ

We’ve got a fun, friendly weekend of good times, in a beautiful setting, for a token ticket cost which goes 100% towards helping Historic Speedwell. Join us with your family for an all-ages steampunk event at the birthplace of the telegraph! Musicians, artists, games, entertainers, and enjoyment for everyone. Facebook Event.

New York Comic Con – Oct 11th - 14th – New York, NY

Adding this con here because it is a major stop for steampunks as well as geeks of all stripes. Come share Halloween with us!” Headliner guests Unwoman, Vourteque, Voltaire, Psyche Corporation, and the Goblin Market. Facebook Event.

SteamDRUNK Pub Crawl – Oct 20th – Fifth Ward, WI

Ay-leen the Peacemaker is happy to add some lovely fall colors to her steamwear (and by that she means red, orange, and yellow). She also runs the multicultural steampunk blog Beyond Victoriana, writes academic things, and tweets.

I wish there was something going on in California now since I missed the big events in July. The Jules Verne event also sounds wicked I want to go.
