This month, school starts and steampunks come out to play. Downtown Atlanta becomes a retronauts’ paradise, a museum doubles as a premiere concert venue in Texas, and convention-hopping becomes all the rage throughout Europe. Kevin Steil, the Airship Ambassador, and our guest contributor, Michael (aka “The Mad Hatter”) of The Mad Hatter’s Bookshelf and Book Review join me to give us some steampunk shenanigans to kick off the autumn season.
The Airship Ambassador recommends:
Asylum - Sept 6-9th, 2012 - Lincoln, England, UK
From their website: “Weekend at the Asylum is now entering its fourth year. As one of the biggest steampunk events in the world, it benefits from the backdrop of the beautiful and historic City of Lincoln, which has welcomed us since 2009. The event attracts visitors from all over the world to enjoy a full convention-style day programme and steampunk market with a fringe-style evening programme of live theatre, music and comedy.”
ESC - European Steampunk Convention - Sept 29-30th, 2012 - Various European locations, see website
Easily enough the most ambitious steampunk convention of 2012, ESC propose to get as many steampunk-themed pub moots, concerts, meetings, LARPs and whatever else the scene has to offer in each participating country. Then they’ll connect them all via the ætherweb and turn them into one major event spreading across Europe. Visit their Facebook page.
About our guest contributor: Michael (aka The Mad Hatter) runs The Mad Hatter’s Bookshelf and Book Review where he shares his views on genre books with a predilection for steampunk. He can also be found nattering on Twitter or in search of the perfect piece of bacon. He is currently working on two anthology projects and is hoping to find them good publishing homes soon.
Cirque Du Risque’s Steampunk Ball - September 15th, 2012 - Tampa, FL
Why Michael recommends this: “This ball looks to be the sexy side of steampunk, mixing fashion with burlesque and a touch of the circus. There are also contests for the best mustache and most innovative hat, the latter of which is a contest I’d definitely try to place in.”
Steampunk Art Exhibit by Erin Keck - August 29th to October 13th, 2012 - PCCA Gallery in Newport, PA
Meet the artist Erin Keck on Friday, September 7th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM
Why Michael recommends this: “One of my favorite aspects of steampunk is the intricacy that is involved in the art, and the work that Keck creates is gorgeous in its detail.” Images of the artist’s work can be found here and here.
Sky Commodore’s Autumn Masquerade Ball - September 15th, 2012, 8PM - Frontiers of Flight Museum, Dallas, TX
Why Michael recommends this: “This is more a family affair and given that it is at a flight museum it should be quite a venue. The Steam Powered Giraffe performance alone should be enough to lure most of you in. If you haven’t checked them out, do so, as they have loads of YouTube videos. Mask wearing is highly encouraged.” Visit the Facebook page.

Victorian Picnic at the Mountain View Cemetery - Sept 23rd, 2012, 12:30 PM - Fresno, CA
From their Facebook page: “Yep, we’re talking about a cemetery picnic. It’s not as morbid as it sounds. In fact, graveyard noshing was quite popular during the Victorian era. During the early heyday of the rural-cemetery movement, around 1830 to 1850 — when the concept of locating cemeteries in natural, scenic settings on the outskirts of town, rather than in the city center, became popular — families were encouraged to spend Sunday afternoons at the necropolis, either dining with their dead or simply picnicking on their prepaid plots.”
