First Trailer for Oz the Great and Powerful

James Franco versus Flying Monkeys! Sam Raimi directs! Does the first trailer for Oz the Great and Powerful actually look kinda cool?

Yes, that does look kind of cool. Crossing fingers.

I am a huge fan of the books and of the movies, The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz. I have very little hope for this film being as good as my imagination, and the director of the Spider Man trilogy? Not helping. No, no, graphically, it may look cool (and I'm excited about the way the witch's soldiers looked so true to the original film), but I'm keeping my standards low for acting and scripting and just about everything else.

Who is the lady in red supposed to be?
I'm with AshleyMcGee, the Oz books are very near and dear to my heart, so I'm a bit nervous. It could be good, but it really depends on how they play it out--something they didn't show in the trailer. They only focused on looks, and I want to know how they plan on interpreting the books.

Looks very cool, but looks are one thing and execution is another. As has been said, everything here will depend on how this is spun out and played onscreen.

That said, it's worth noting that The Land of Oz, the Baum book from which most of the material here must necessarily be extrapolated, shows us a somewhat wilder and less civilized country than Oz became as the series evolved. So there is more precedent than the MGM film might suggest for extracting an action-adventurish picture from the Wizard's history....

Looks fantastic to me. And an excellent premise for a "prequel." How did that old man get to Oz and rise to such great heights? (I'm striving to listen to the other TWELVE Oz books via an app. I discovered that many people do not know they exist).

@laurene135 I'm guessing that the lady in red is Glinda. In the books Glinda is the witch of the South (actually she's called a Sorceress). In Oz every land has a color and the South (Quadling Country) is red. Yeah...I'm an Oz geek. Oh...and there were actually 40 official Oz books, but Baum wrote the original 14. All great books. I can't recommend them enough, no matter how old you are! Oh..and can't wait for this movie (obviously) :)
