The Doctor’s Next Companion is... Madame de Pompadour?

The Doctor’s Next Companion is... Madame de Pompadour?

Bleeding Cool has put together a compelling bit of speculation on who might bop about in the TARDIS with Matt Smith after Amy and Rory exit to their happy make-believe spin-off. They’ve tipped Sophia Myles as the actor playing the new companion. Doctor Who fans should be very familiar with Myles as the the snog-happy Madame de Pompadour in “The Girl in the Fireplace.”

Bleeding Cool cites increased attention to Myles on behalf of Steven Moffat, Doctor Who Magazine, and Writer’s Tale co-author Benjamin Cook. There’s also the fact that her first appearance was in a Moffat-penned episode where she openly wondered at the Doctor’s real name, which is a theme that popped up heavily in the last season of the show.

Moffat has stated that the new companion will be “a new friend” so odds are she’s not playing Madame de Pompadour again, but it seems likely she’ll be a presence once more. You can see the full list of connections at Bleeding Cool.

Stubby the Rocket is the mascot of Tor.com and knows who the next companion is but can’t tell you it’s Wil Wheaton.

Ms. Myles is a great actress, whose previous guest role on Doctor Who was a standout in the series. If she has even half as much chemistry with Matt Smith as she had with David Tenant, she will be a great addition to the show.

Oh yes, please! She was fantastic as Pompadour and I would love for her to be in that role as his companion. I mean COME ON, the historical figure was brilliant (in the US usage of the term, not the British ;), having a companion from the "past" would be awesome, and she had such great chemistry!

But I'll take her as a new character too.

This is awesome news. “The Girl in the Fireplace” is one of my favorite episodes. I hope this happens.

Well, if they bring the actress back, it should be as MdP herself, not as a cousin or descendant with a strkingly similar appearance and character. Doc can do a death-bed replacement with the Flesh or something similar so as not to alter the time line.

Over at Aint-it-cool-news, one of the commentators thinks that the Moffat-Myles twitter conversation is a ploy which disproves, rather than proves the theory. Hmmmm.
