Steampunk Events for January 2012

This coming year, I’m aiming to keep people up-to-speed about the most interesting steampunk events from across the United States and around the world. Occasionally, I’ll be asking other steampunk news hounds to give their own recs for the brassiest, classiest, or just plain amazing happenings in our community. This month, Kevin Steil of the Airship Ambassador, one of the most comprehensive steampunk resources on the aetherwebz, dropped a line to suggest his top picks.

This January you can go to a steampunk convention in a floating hotel, take a walk for charity, get a taste of steamy smexiness and more after the jump. Feel free to shout-out additional events in the comments.

The Airship Ambassador recommends:

1. Her Royal Majesty’s Steampunk Symposium Jan 13 – 16th, Long Beach, CA.

This first-year convention is taking place on the cruise-ship-turned-hotel, the Queen Mary. Featured guests include John Magnificent, Unwoman, Veronique Chevalier, 6 String Samurai (the band), and the creative team behind the steampunk webseries Mantecoza.

2. Dr. Grymm Laboratories presents The Steampunk Bizarre Exhibit, running now until Jan, 15th, Hartford, CT

Now in its third year running, this year’s theme is “The Unknown” and features 21 new and upcoming steampunk artists and craftspeople from around the world. The exhibition is located at the Mark Twain House.

3. Teezeremonie zu Ehren von Mr. Sherlock Holmes (Tea ceremony in honor of Mr. Sherlock Holmes) January 6th, Tannus, Germany

It’s not often you get to have tea in a castle. The Schlosshotel Kronberg was was finished in 1893 under the commission of Empress Victoria Frederick, and is one of the most impressive 5-star hotels in the country. The tea will be held inside its opulent library, pictured here.
