Too Much Party for Skywalker in Vintage Interview

What’s going on with Mark Hamill in this rare, recently surfaced interview about Star Wars? Check out the part where he talks about “The Goodies” and “The Baddies” around 2:40. Priceless.

Very British phraseology, "the Goodies" and "the Baddies." He knows what audience he's playing for.

You know, we really DON'T know why the Empire is so bad. Other than blowing up Alderaan (after 20 years of super-weapon development) and acting dickish and authoritarian, what exactly do they do that's so oppressive? How is life for the average Galactic citizen any different under them than under the Republic? It's not as if that much could really change in that many cultures that far away from one another, in just 20 years.

What a wonderfully honest and open interview, from a time (long, long ago) when actor's opinions could still reach the public without being vetted by marketing droids.

Gee, those clips look kind of fun in fuzzy black and white video. The control boards and droids get a kind of cardboard and tinfoil look that's quite endearing. Has anyone tried to do a lo-fi edit of Star Wars?

What's up with Mark? He's exhausted, but still remarkabley relaxed and happy to be promoting a film in which he was proud to have been cast. The fatigue is evident on his face... and still he has the good grace and professional control to care about giving the interviewer his "money's worth" and providing an informative, candid and charming presentation for the viewers. This is a wonderful bit of historic footage that I, for one, would never have seen if you had not posted this for us all to enjoy. It was worthy and entertaining watch for me and I thank appreciate it. Thanks again!

This interview was fascinating. A great look back at the Beforetimes, when Star Wars wasn't this monolithic centerpiece of American pop culture, but just a wildly successful SF movie that hadn't yet morphed into what it would become.

And yes, Mark Hamill is awesome. His geekiness is palpable. It shines through in his every gesture.

Thanks for posting this, Torcom.

Wow, I hope everyone who watched this back in the day had already seen Star Wars. It's loaded with spoilers!

Drake_ACA @7: I don't think they cared too much about spoilers back then. They were too busy fighting off Mongol invasions and worrying about the Black Death.

Oh wait… that's the 14th Century. My bad. I always get that and the 70s confused.

@1 SeeingI It's generally established that Palpatine enslaved alien races like the Wookies and Mon Calamari, and then there is the whole taxation-without-representation thing inherent in any absolute monarchy. But maybe if those young ewoks would just quit whining and get jobs, they wouldn't have time to complain about the economic injustice in the Empire.

@ MattLondon: True, true, but none of those things are ever mentioned *in the movies* LOL

Why does a universe with cheap, plentiful and obedient droids even NEED slaves?
