Tyrion Lannister Wins the Emmy!

Congratulations to Peter Dinklage for winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series! Dinklage portrays Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s A Game of Thrones, the television adaptation of the first novel in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Aside from Sean Bean’s head, Dinklage as Tyrion was the breakout character of the premiere season of the fantasy television series.

(Are you proud of him now, Tywin?)

Below is a fan-made reel of great Tyrion Lannister moments from the series. (Spoilers, naturally.)

Photos: Peter Dinklage’s onscreen reaction. And some post-award backstage charm.

Tyrion Lannister has to be the most interesting and intriguing character in GoT. He's bad... He's good... He has a sense of justice.

Peter Dinklage deserves the recognition he's received for this.

Why do bad guys always have upper-class English accents?

uP with dwarfs playing MAJOR characters... HIS, is one of the BIGGEST rolls, in ALL of the GoT series! Despite his being a man of small stature, his dynamic delivery; STANDS TALL, in his performances... alongside, those of normal hight! Congratulations! Well deserved!!!

If for no other reason (and there are other reasons), he deserves that Emmy for the Joffrey slapping scene.

Yay, Pete D! Unfortunately, he forgot to thank his character's creator -- Sitting. Right. There. On the upside, he wore Hobbit hair to show fantasy franchise solidarity.

He only thanked around four people. I think he was honestly surprised and didn't write a speech and probably forgot a lot of people as he is really shy in front of crowds. Not sure why people think GRRM would be upset. He was probably surprised Dinklage won too . It was a long shot for a first season show. It was the best part of the Emmys for me. Almost made up for Idris Elba being robbed.

@8: Well I, for one, never thought or suggested Martin would be upset. He's been in showbiz for decades and knows how these things go. I just found the detail mildly amusing, at best. Or worst.

Don't know about all bad guys, but most of the bad guys in GoT (plus Tyrion, but I can't really see him as a bad guy, certainly not as of now) really need upper-class accents of some kind. They're aristocrats. In most countries the hereditary aristocracy does speak differently to ordinary people. Actually one of the things that drives me crazy about Roy Dotrice's otherwise incredible Song of Ice and Fire audiobooks is his insistence on giving very working-class accents to characters like Tyrion and Robert. It flattens them out. The point of Tyrion in particular is the contrast between his inherited social status and his disability.

Oh sweet! This is well deserved. Everyone did an amazing performance on Game of Thrones, but Dinklage's portrayal of Tyrion was truly spectacular.
