The Neatest Zelda-Related Thing You’ll See Today

These young men, with apparently quite a lot of free time, have put together a shockingly intricate rendition of the Legend of Zelda theme on marimba, snare, timpani, cymbal, and triangle. Mostly, marimba. If you don’t know what a marimba is, it’s a multi-person instrument that resembles a xylophone. That makes this pretty damn neat.

Marimba is a multi-person instrument? Huh? A xylophone has metal keys, which when struck resonate by themselves. A marimba has wooden keys which when struck resonate through the pipes suspended just underneath them. Both are single-person instruments, unless you feel like sharing the keyboard space with someone else.

Sorry! I'm wrong, no prob. I'd only ever seen it played by multiple people, usually two at a time.

Of course there's a triangle. Of course!

@musicallyChallenged - xylophones are wooden but all their keys are the same width, unlike the marimba, and they're in a different pitch range usually. Actually the name even indicates wood (think xylem). Sometimes the name xylophone is used for the glockenspiel, which is small and has metal keys.

@BritMandelo - Keiko Abe and Evelyn Glennie are two of my favorite solo marimba players and can be found easily on YouTube! The folks playing on this video are pretty good--to play those short little notes and still have them sound clearly is very hard. I'm also jealous that they appear to have a nice marimba in their home (is that a staircase behind them? are they in their pajamas? will the mysteries never cease??).

This is amazing. I can't add much beyond that.
