True Blood episode review: “Cold Grey Light of Dawn”

Well, you can’t really keep at a sprint forever, right? This week’s episode of True Blood was pretty damn boring, truth be told. At least until the last ten minutes. It’s not that the hour was without some highlights (that ending!), but it overall felt like a ton of set-up. Sookie asks some important questions, La-la unlocks his potential, and bad witch Antonia finds a new BFF.

Spoilers ahead.

So long, hot security chick. We hardly knew thee and when we did, we thought you were Evan Rachel Wood in disguise. Or at least I did. Antonia makes the vampire Louis her bitch to announce her rebirth. Can’t say she didn’t give the vampires fair warning about her walking-on-sunshine spell. The popular vampires will at least get a heads-up from Bill to sleep in silver to prevent immolation. But ugly, lonely vamps like Maxine’s neighbor are SOL, I guess. I wonder if anyone would’ve warned poor old Eddie, were he alive.

While the vampires and witches go at it, the wolf pack of Shreveport grew by two. I’m buying Debbie’s attempts at redemption much more than Tommy’s. This new pack looks potentially dangerous, but certainly leagues above Cooter. Debbie seems so happy to be a part of a pack again. But Alcide’s continued attraction to Sookie is definitely widening the gulf between them. I don’t know what was sadder, the look on Alcide’s face when he saw her with Eric or the look on Debbie’s when she saw her boyfriend’s mixed emotions. Debbie may or may not become unhinged because of this, but either way, I can’t see her and Alcide being together much longer.

Sookie and Eric spent half this episode having sex. Literally. How did they make it back to Sookie’s house like that? I’m going with vampire powers. When they disentangled themselves long enough to breathe, Sookie wonders what will happen when Eric gets his memory back. Eric says that he never wants it back if it means Sookie might stop loving him. I miss smarmy Eric a bit, but damn if Alexander Skarsgard’s wide-eyed innocent act isn’t insanely cute. I’m starting to wonder if Antonia’s going to live long enough to reverse the spell on Eric.

And Pam. Poor, poor Pam.

Okay, Pam’s a bitch. She’s also needlessly racist in her insults this season. But all of the other vampires get someone they love to put them in silver for the night. Bill and his child Jessica, Eric and Sookie. Pam gets Ginger. And six injections of anti-rot serum four times a day. I love Ginger though. The way she rode Pam’s coffin, you can bet everyone’s favorite barfly spent some serious time on a mechanical bull.

Tommy’s jaunt as a skinwalking rapist was revealed. Luna didn’t look nearly disgusted enough, in my opinion. But do we really think Tommy’s going out with such a whimper?

Down in Mexico, Grandpa Brujo utters the words no one wants to hear their grandpa say: “What? I was fucking my wife." Uncomfortable. Anyway, Jesus is safe from his family’s black magic, for now at least. Or maybe his family isn’t all bad. Uncle Luca sounded like a good brujo. But either way, La-la now sees dead people. Like Arlene’s baby’s ghost.

Tara joins forces with Antonia because they are both fueled by hate for vampires. Tara’s always some greater evil’s flunky, right? She just kind of clings to whatever comes along. This character has so run her course for me. I can’t find anything to like about her anymore. It’s sad. So much wasted badass-dom and Angela Bassett arms.

The ending was really the most exciting part of the show. I was surprised that Antonia performed her spell so soon. But I’m glad they didn’t drag it out. I loved watching Jessica fight her chains and claw her way towards the front door as Jason raced to save her.  Go gallant Jason! Vampires in chains = compelling. Jason in chains = a shame. Will the vampires be sleeping in silver every day until Antonia’s wiped out?

So... yeah. That was pretty much it this episode. I liked the different couples talking about themselves. Everyone’s in some kind of love-related turmoil. I’d like to say Hoyt and Jessica will go the distance, but Jessica admitted that she wasn’t in love with Hoyt anymore. That’s awful. I’ve become more invested in Hoyt and Jessica as a couple than any of the other couple on the show. They’re just so likeable. So real on a show of sexy fantasy. But that realness works both ways; given what Jessica’s going through, how she’s maturing, it’s all the more heartbreaking to see their relationship in such plausable jeopardy.

True Blood airs Sundays at 9PM E/PT on HBO.

Is this what you meant to say? If so, I'm confused.

That was not what I meant to say. We have a copyeditor, but they have many posts to read and usually don't watch the episodes live, if at all. I also write as fast as I can so a post can be up first thing Monday morning.

Thank you.

I miss the old Tara from the first season, the one who was smarter than everybody else because she read books all the time and who knew big words that had more than one syllable in them. We haven't seen that Tara for a long time. Instead, we get Crying Tara.

Tara has been the most whiney hysterical unlikeable character ever for the longest time -- almost from the very beginning. I hate the scenes she's in.
Why have They done this to her? Is that all They could think of for Sookie's BFF? She was so different in the book. But the television series -- with all the kills in that show, why not her?

Love, C.

So agreed on the Jessica/Hoyt thing. And I loved Bill telling her that just because she isn't in love with Hoyt anymore doesn't mean she's lost her humanity. People fall in and out of love all the time. Unfortunately, Hoyt doesn't have much else going on besides Jessica, whereas her world is "endless" and she's just now discovering it. Poor Hoyt. He's about to lose his girlfriend and his best friend in one crushing blow.

It will be interesting to see Tara and Sookie on opposite sides of the coming war. Especially since they aren't quite friends at the moment.

The coming battle may not only pit Tara against Sookie, but Tara against Layfette as well, which should be interesting. Since Tara's not going to kill Sookie, in spite of the teasers clearly showing Sookie getting shot, because then you wouldn't have a show anymore, I wonder if Sookie is going to be forced to kill Tara. That would be interesting.

In spite of the Vampire League frowning on killing humans because it's bad PR, I can't believe that the vampires wouldn't just go ahead and kill Antonia at this point, and dump her body in the swamp for the gators where nobody would ever find out about it. Once the spell making them want to meet the sun is past, it wouldn't be hard to do. All they'd have to do is rush into the coven at superspeed and snap her neck, without giving her time to do or say anything. They don't have to try to bite her on the neck. I find it annoying that the vampires relie on this form of attack. Eric was a Viking warrior, yet it never occurs to him to pick up a sword or an ax and use it with superspeed and superstrength; using a weapon like that, he might even have been able to defeat Russell; all it would have taken is one fast, sudden blow. (A similar thought: Why is Bill's gun loaded with regular bullets? You'd have thought that it would be loaded with wooden bullets, to defend himself against any vampires he might be having trouble with there in his vampire lair.)

--He's gotten in trouble for killing a vampire in the past. And it looks like he has to get permission for offing one (unless it's in self-defense), so he likely views incapacitating them with silver bullets as a good alternative.

let's not forget pam was caught on camera harming a human being. she is now subject to execution. although, she should be the one allowed to take antonia down. her suffering has been pretty gruesome.

bill's comment about jessica falling out of love with hoyt reminds me how young she was in the first place. she's a good ten years younger than hoyt. he needs to grow up and find a woman. their relationship did make last season tolerable though. jessica is the most interesting of all the vampires because of her youth. the rest of them have airs of tragedy and bitterness. jessica is a huge contrast to lorena's hollow statue.

this skinwalker storyline is very confusing to me. as explained, one can become a skinwalker by accident. my own understanding involves an deliberate ritual that includes the blood sacrifice of a family member. when luna said she had to turn into her mom, i thought "why would you have to do that?" and now this tommy thing...? tommy is quite a tragic character. he's a jerk by default but he could learn to be better. i think the most damaging thing in all this was big maxine running him down about learning to read. that was probably the nail in his coffin. (for the record, i don't for a second buy that he killed his mother that easily. melinda spent decades winning dogfights against real dogs. that lady is a stone cold badass who can definitely handle a little three-way scrap. come on.)

i cannot understand why that other waitress, who is homeless with two kids, would risk getting drawn deeper into this vampire conflict by going back to the coven. leaving town makes more sense.

Yes, so agreed about Holly. It seemed a little too easy to get her all mixed up with Antonia's vendetta. Of course, my answer for pretty much everybody on this show is, Get the heck out of Bon Temps already! That place is bad news.

As for Tommy's mom, the whole reason they depended on Tommy so much is that she was getting too old and weak to fight anymore. She nearly got killed in the last dog fight she was in. And even if she had turned into a dog to take Tommy down, he could turn into a stronger dog and that would have been that anyway. His killing of her did some a little easy though. But I think they just wanted to make it clear that it was an accident, as opposed to him killed Jo Lee in very deliberate fashion.

And I'm not sure Luna HAD to turn into her mom. But maybe after you kill your shifter relative, that is the first person you shift into by default.

Also agreed on Hoyt. He's pushing 30 at this point, while Jessica was only 17 when they got together. But I'm sure since Hoyt was under his mother's thumb for so long, he didn't feel much older than that himself. I mean, he was a virgin too when he met Jessica. This is his first serious relationship, just as it was hers. Therefore, doomed. Too bad though. I did like them together, and if anyone deserves to be happy on this show it's poor Hoyt. And Terry.

I'd conveniently forgotten about Hoyt's age, even though at the time it certainly bugged me. They're cute n' all, but at first he was too old for Jessica. Now, Jessica's too worldly for Hoyt. I don't think first relationships are doomed to fail, but this one started off with a ton of things stacked against it. Hoyt really only has Jessica going for him. That's unhealthy. He's a giant man-child and while it may buy him a couple of more years with an immortal, it's not a long-term solution to their lifespan differences.

@sofrina Totally with you on Jessica being the most interesting vampire. She's a breath of fresh air. You can feel her exhilaration at her new life as well as the frustrations. She doesn't have centuries of baggage yet.

Let's hope they don't toast Jessica, as the cliffhanger is designed to make you fear that they will. But I'll be surprised if they do.

One obvious solution to the vampire's problem with the witches is to hire the werewolves to kill them, since, not being dead, they should be immune to a necromancer's magic. It's already been established that you can hire werewolves for money (or for financial considerations anyway, in Alcide's case) to do distasteful jobs, and the vampires have plenty of money. And the Vampire League wouldn't have any authority over werewolves, and so it probably wouldn't blow back publically on the vampires.

For that matter, you could hire humans, like Bill's private SWAT team, to take out the witches, or Antonia at least, although perhaps they'd be more vulnerable to magic than the supernatural-themselves werewolves would be.

Jessica is especially interesting given her speech to Jason last week. "I'm fast, and I'm strong, and there ain't nobody can hurt me." And the very next day a which is making her greet the sun. I think this will be the first rude awakening for her that there are beings out there who could hurt her. And the breakup with Hoyt is going to break her heart, even if she's the one who does the dumping. I don't mean that first relationships are always doomed. Just that they're on this show, which means nothing as sweet as their love would be made to last for long. Although they could always find their way back to each other later.

@11 Good call on the werewolves. I think you should head the Authority.
I'd love to see them used in the show a bit more. The pack's just kind of off to the side, doing their own thing at the moment. I wonder if Eric would've thought of this solution, if he had his memory. He's a lot sneakier than Bill. Or he was.

One problem with this witch storyline is that it's really an artifical problem. If it wasn't for the Vampire Authority conveniently threatening to kill any vampires who killed humans, they could easily have sent somebody in to kill Antonia before she came into her full powers. Even now, they could rush in at superspeed and snap her neck, or hire the werewolves to kill her, or send in Bill's human hit squad. So it's not really much of a threat once the "walk into the sun" spell has passed, being something that has been artifically created as a menace for story purposes.

Which makes me fear that the Antonia story will wrap up soon and make way for... the dreaded return of faeries in the big finale. Do not want.

I disagree on the boring part. This episode actually got my interest again and I was screaming at Jess all at the end and for Jason to get to her. Now I'm not so weirded out by Jess/Jason.

first off, they cannot just hire the werewolves or send in their private commandoes. these people are all subject to human laws. that mass murder would result in more problems. how exactly do vampires achieve civil rights after it gets out they set up a werewolf massacre? if you found out there were werewolves too, would you tell your congressman to vote yea? the only win would be to send in the wolves and then kill them at the scene. and the wolves will see that trap very clearly. hence, the neutrality.

@9 -
And I'm not sure Luna HAD to turn into her mom. But maybe after you kill your shifter relative, that is the first person you shift into by default.

Luna actually said she had to turn into her mom. And by that notion, Tommy would have turned into his mother instead of the alive-and-kicking Sam.

On the part about Melinda, what I'm saying is in order for a human being to spend years (longer than any dog's lifespan) successfully fighting actual dogs to the death would have to take an incredible amount of cunning and viciousness. dogs have the advantage over us in a fight because they're guided by so much killer instinct. the dogs melinda has killed were not handicapped by the kind of intelligence and reason she would have been. in order to be so - profoundly - successful at that, melinda has got to be "the toughest, meanest, wiliest son-of-a-bitch" around (i'm quoting the next d.d. barant book there). melinda is beyond the ultimate gladiator.

i'm not saying melinda should have turned into a dog and fought tommy. i'm saying she should have a) reflexively put up a real fight and b) been much harder to kill.

No matter who kills Antonia, there's no realistic reason why anybody should ever find out about it--you've got a lot of swamp to hand, and it's filled with hungry gators. Tommy's parents certainly weren't the first bodies to be disposed of by dumping them in the swamp.

Also, there's no need to kill anybody except for Antonia, so a "massacre" wouldn't really be necessary. Without her, the rest of the group is harmless. I can't see it being "against human law" worrying the vampires all that much, unless it's exposed on national TV; I don't even think it would have phased the old Eric that much, who has kidnapped and killed several human in the course of the show when he felt it needed to be done. Burying Russell in cement is against human law too, as is killing all the werewolves and vampires who were killed along the way last season. Clearly, human law only applies indifferently at best, as far as the vampires are concerned.

Speaking of the rest of the group being harmless without Antonia, wasn't it established that the circle needed Layfette as a "battery" in order to make the magic work? They seemed to be getting by without him last night, though. I could see a line where they end up using Layfette to fight Antonia, but, if so, they're going to have to justify better why he would. After all, he fears vampires, particularly Eric, was originally part of the circle, and would end up fighting Tara if he changes sides.

I'm not sure why they came back from Mexico, and back to Bon Temps at that. Weren't they on the run from Bon Temps in the first place?Aren't they still worried that Eric is going to get them? What ability do they think they gained in Mexico that's going to keep Eric or the other vampires from killing them? Yes, they found out that Layfette is a medium, but I'm not sure I see why they'd think that would keep them safe if Pam or Eric came bursting into Merlotte's looking for blood (literally).

Liked:

-Awkward Andy ("They were on sale.")
-Awkward Jason/Hoyt conversation.
-Jessica opening up to Bill.
-ending.

Disliked:

-Tommy still being alive.
-Return of crying Tara. FFS.
-A bit slow.

Random Thoughts:

-Sweet 'n innocent Eric is starting to wear thin for me. Way more interesting character as a badass. Has lost his edge. Hope he gets memories back soon.

-If Sookie is so worried about Eric strolling into the sun, why not let him feed on her just in case?

-Don't think Jessica's gonna fry. Gunshot before she opened the door probably meant Jason got the best of the guard and tackles her back indoors before she goes up in flames.

-Why was Bill able to attempt to warn Jessica and try to prevent her from leaving to see the sun? Did he somehow manage to break the spell?

-Tara's GF just sprinting away in the opposite direction as Pam choked the life out of Tara. Not a quality you want in a soulmate. Although I suppose it was her first encounter with a vamp, purportedly.

-Purple Pam receiving shots from Ginger in her coffin bore an uncanny resemblance to Paris Hilton.

-Jason is basically wiping his ass with the "Guy" code if he ends up doing what he clearly wants to do to his best friend.

@20 Well at least Jason made Hoyt some sloppy joes... That's something.

Yeah, you'd think offering your magic sunproof blood to a vampire boyfriend under threat of a spell would be a logical thing to do. But maybe Sookie's worried that, like Bill or like Eric with Claudine, he'll reach a point where he can't control himself anymore and kill her. Maybe Amnesia-Eric wouldn't even take it if offered, since it's such a risk.

-If Sookie is so worried about Eric strolling into the sun, why not let him feed on her just in case?

--Because 1) He might not be able to stop and end up accidentally killing her. 2) The effect only lasts a few minutes. The only reason it lasted long enough for him to frolic in the lake before is because he drained an entire full-blooded faery.

-Why was Bill able to attempt to warn Jessica and try to prevent her from leaving to see the sun? Did he somehow manage to break the spell?

--He wasn't trying to prevent her from going to see the sun. He was begging her to unchain him so he could go too.

Sofrina, good point about Tommy and that he probably should have shifted into his mom. But what fun would that have been? And I'm not sure that actress could have pulled off the awesome Tommy impersonation that Sam did. Emmy worthy!
