Weekly Who: Eccleston Refuses to Return as the Doctor

Welcome to our Weekly Who roundup! Every Friday morning (or less if we’ve just been crazy on the Who front) we collect random/cool Doctor Who-related news and things that we’ve found in our internet travels. Feel free to point out your own finds in the comments!

This week, Christopher Eccleston dashes our hopes for a proper Nu Who multi-Doctor storyline and the Daily Mail begins to wonder if the show is now too scary. Dark clouds gather below the cut....

In Doctor Who news:

1.) Count the Ninth Doctor out of any multi-Doctor story. In a recent interview with Graham Norton on BBC Radio 2, Ninth Doctor actor Christopher Eccleston was asked straight up whether he would be interested in participating in a multi-Doctor storyline to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary, which is forthcoming in 2013.

His answer? “No, I never bathe in the same river twice.”

Eccleston is full of praise for Steven Moffat, however, citing the first season episodes “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances” as his absolute favorite scripts. You can listen to the interview below, compiled by YouTube user WhoFan9. Considering the rumors that dog Eccleston’s departure and the actor’s feeling for the series, it is surprisingly sweet.

2.) BBC ratings continue to fall for Doctor Who (although, as many of you pointed out last week, they’re still well above BBC’s average viewership) and the Daily Mail is speculating in the above link that it is perhaps because the show, long famed for giving British children a good scare, is now too scary.

io9 picked up on the speculation and offered an additional observation in regards to the season opener being far too continuity heavy to interest new viewers.

We are over the moon about the season opener ourselves, but aren’t new to the series by any means. We can definitely see the validity of the continuity argument, however. Have you or anyone you know had trouble getting someone into the show this season?

On to the cool stuff:

1.) Doctor Who sits in the middle of the perfect science fiction Venn diagram. OffWorld Design is now offering a tee featuring three important science fiction elements and the one show that features them all.

2.) Not his first rodeo. Tumblr user Captain Awesome has quietly pointed out that the Doctor was more than a little bit present at William and Kate’s royal wedding last week....

3.) The BBC is hiding something from you. Tumblr user LaLaBauldie has discovered hidden messages in the BBC’s Doctor Who portal. Checking out the “Fourth Dimension” pages for each individual episode leads you to oddly italicized words which, when combined, form sentences.

So far they haven’t led to anything, but the season is young yet!

4.) My but we are chatty lately. SPOILERS AHEAD. Tor.com was shocked by the conclusion of “Day of the Moon” and marveled at a dark new Doctor who now forces us to pick up arms and actively murder other living beings. The Doctor has always been dark, but this seems a new level even for him.

We also tried to unravel River and the Doctor’s progression. It’s still pretty confusing, all told.

Stubby the Rocket is the mascot of Tor.com and thinks that if anyone call pull off a coup and get Eccleston back, Moffat can.

I actually know of one or two people who had never watched any Doctor Who before the Saturday before last, and have had no difficulty at all with the series so far.

I am dissapointed that Eccleston may not return for the 5oth anniversary. Hopefully that will change. *fingers crossed*

I've personally been having a hell of a time getting into the new season (getting into season 5 was almost as much of a pain). I don't see the scary aspect of it. It's just too plain cheesy now for me. I want scary, I want dark, I want angsty, and I'm sick to death of fish custard. The Moffatt seasons, while thoroughly entertaining, aren't anything but entertaining. It's all candy and no substance. It's like starting with season 5 of Angel and running backwards so we're now at Cordy trying to be an actress and Wesley fumbling around on a motorcycle. And though I loved Angel (even more than Buffy), I'll take season 5 over season 1 in a hearbeat.

And let the flamewar begin.

I thought they said the ratings when you include the BBC iplayer and other things has actually been higher than previous season openers? That the overnights were down but apparently more and more people aren't bothering with live viewing and are using things like the BBC iplayer (and hulu.com in the US, though not for this) to do all their viewing. ....and thus the overnight ratings are increasingly irrelevant and aren't giving a proper picture?

The opener was confusing but only a little bit and was rather satisfying to watch, I personally think.

I much prefer the Eleventh Doctor to Tenth, much as I know that may be shocking to various Tennent fans. I like David Tennent but the constant focus on Rose with the Tenth Doctor soured most of my experience with it (I have a hard time watching Season 2-4 in general now).

I love Christopher Eccleston, however, so I hope he can be taled into at least a momentary bit of time in something!!

It is hard to compare exactly. Easter was later on in the year this year, plus we had the Royal Wedding. It meant that there were 4 bank holidays in two weeks. This might mean that more people went abroad for a holiday. Also for those that didn't Britain had very sunny weather so I would have thought that plenty may well have gone for a day (or weekend) out.
