Ready to Wear Some Tights, Clark? Smallville Ends Tonight

Smallville

Tonight at 8 PM EST, an impressive ten year run of Smallville will come to a close in a 2-hour finale that seems to include the wedding of Clark Kent and the idea that Krypton’s last son may in fact start wearing some tights.

In preperation for this milestone, Super-fans are gearing up with retrospectives, predictions and even cheat-sheets to help you out if you’ve missed an episode or twenty. Here’s a brief roundup of the Superman knowledge you need before viewing tonight’s finale.

This looks like the end of Supe on the smallscreen for now.  What did you think of Smallville and its ten-year run?

I was enjoyed Smallville all the way through Season 5. They lost me in Season 6 with the introduction of Supergirl and from what I've heard from the few people I know who actually kept up with it, I haven't missed much.

I'm kind of tempted to watch the final episode though, if only to see how they transition to the tights. And isn't he supposed to finally fly?

WTF? He hasn't flown yet? I stopped watching around season 5 as well.

It just went off the air and while I watched season 1, skipped til 5 with the addition of Brainiac, got bored and stopped watching til Absolute Justice aired, I gotta say, outside of a few slow points, the last 15 minutes had me fanboying out like nobody's business. It was everything a fan of the show could hope for and the last scene was brilliant.

Watched every episode. It was so nice to see Rosenbaum back as Lex, even though he was underused. And it was nice to see Clark finally become Superman. I think they ended it at the right time. This season has had a few great episodes (John Glover's return as Lionel Luthor was right up there with any episode in the series) but too many "treading water" episodes. I'll still miss the show, but I think they made the right choice.

I thought they could've done with less of the memory shots and had more action between Supes and Darkseid. He flies thru him and kills him?!? Kind of sappy, I thought. Overall tho, a pretty good ending to a very good series.

I have mixed emotions about the series finale and the series as a whole, but it was definitely time for the show to end. It took Clark far too long to don the cape and every year they delayed the appearance of "Superman" the show felt weaker & weaker - as if they were just treading water until he could put on the suit.

What I Liked About the Series:

Very emotional ending, yay for finally giving the fans what they have been waiting for since season 5. Nice to see a show listen to their fan-base.

I enjoyed the character of Chloe throughout the series & felt Allison Mack did an outstanding job of growing with her alter ego. She was always a bright spot in the series and I wish she had been in more of the final season.

I liked the introduction of Oliver Queen / Green Arrow. The actor did a great job there.

Rosenbaum was a great Lex. The early seasons with Lex and Clark becoming almost brothers then later enemies was quite poignant.

John Schneider and Annette O'Toole were great as the Kents. I was sorry to see them leave the series. The show suffered with their departure.

Nice touch when Kara left the 21st century to join the Legion in the 30th century.

I enjoyed seeing the Flash, Aquaman, HawkMan, Stargirl & Dr. Fate - I thought all these characters were well done.

Dislikes:

2 minutes of Clark as Superman (and most of that sub-par video game CGI) was a pretty weak payoff. I wanted an entire episode of Superman action.

Chloe marries the Green Arrow and they have a kid?! Soooo no Black Canary for the Green Arrow? Hmmmmm. Sort of kills that whole decades long comic romance.

It really rubbed me the wrong way how they intoduced Jimmy Olsen into the show years ago and then killed him off - only to replace him with his younger brother also named Jimmy & played by the same actor. WTF was that nonesense about?!

The Darkseid storyline never really paid off - it felt just very thrown in and was a major departure from Darkseid of the comics. I would have opted for another villian to end with. Plenty to choose from.

Erica Durrance was no Terri Hatcher. She came a long way in the role but her Lois always felt contrived. She seemed to have the emotive range of cardboard.

I was really tired of the "blur" storyline. It just felt ridiculous. Ditto with Clark's self worth issues and low self confidence.

The disjointed continuity really hurt the show - Clark met and defeated nearly every major villian before he actually became Superman. That just served to point out how the series was dragging it's feet year after year.

Despite the long list of dislikes, I was still a fan of the show - they seemed to always try to keep true to the comics as best they could. I feel nearly all the problems came from the delayed presence of Clark as Superman.

@SRB: I can agree with all of that. I spent the 30 minutes leading up to him putting on the suit, growling at the tv for him to "GO TO THE FORTRESS AND GET THE SUIT ALREADY!"

The finale was pathetic, from shoddy editing to being a clips show at the end, and poor continuity (even for Smallville). I expected absolutely nothing from the finale and I was still disappointed.

I to haven't watched the show for years but tuned in for the finale. I think Anyone else notice that it just seemed to be a Fifth Element rip off at the end?

I finally got around to watching it last night. It was...decent, I suppose. Even though I haven't watched the last five seasons I didn't feel like I'd missed much. That was definitely a show that should have ended long ago.

Anyway, as far as it goes, it was pretty cool to see Clark finally assume the Superman identity, though the CGI of him flying was really poor and was almost painful to watch. And did they really need to say the word "Hero" as often as they did?

The very last scene was really great...except they ended it about 12 seconds too soon.
Overall, it was mixed with moments that were thrilling and scenes that were so corny as to make me cringe. I'd give it a pretty solid C for a season finale.
