Saturday Morning Cartoons: “N.Y.C.” and “The Cyclotrope”

N.Y.C: Not animation, but animationish. The city just before it became my city.

The Cyclotrope: Because I love bicycles. And because it shows the simple process of 2d animation. (Via TorChris!)

Loved the NYC one! Do you know when it was shot? It really felt like my old city...the music, the chaos, art, streets....very impressionistic. It was my chosen city. Thanks for that post!

Around 1986 I was coming into the city on weekends to take art classes at the met. It was a two hour coummute each way and always involved getting screwed up on dome subway line or another.

I'd forgotten all about No York City, which I probably last saw in college. I didn't spend any real time in NYC until later, in the nineties, but seeing it now gave me an immediate rush of sense memory. All that grafitti in the subway! Also, Laurie Anderson.

I really enjoyed The Cyclotrope, probably cause I like bikes so much) I can't but admire the creative genius of Tim Wheatley who took a rear bicycle wheel from a road bike and created this 18-frame animation fashioned after a typical zoetrope display which is actually, as I understand, a cycle of 18 images that is spun at a certan speed so that the frame rate of the camera filming it gives the illusion of animation. Simple but very funny and it works. I'll do my best trying to find some more of Tim's works by byfiles.com search. Who knows, maybe someday I'll try to create smth as beautiful as his videos;)

These videos were amazing. The NYC video especially gave me a euphoric feel. It's hard to explain but I almost felt nostalgic. It's funny because my city is no way associated with anything in these videos! But they were interesting videos nonethless. I've screen capped the The Cyclotrope. I like the details of it, I'm going to try putting it on an old-tshirt with my Brother SE400 sewing machine. Hopefully the pixels will come out right! Thanks!

These Saturday morning cartoon gives me different feelings. This has become a habit.About N.Y.C, which seems to be a portrayal of the city, but obviously not limited to animation animation techniques.Everyone has their own N.Y.C.The Cyclotrope, I prefer, because I also like to bike.I like to study bicycle principle study axle, balance and rotation, 2D animation techniques demonstrated even more distinctive.
