Weekly Who: Happy Birthday, Tom Baker!

Welcome to our Weekly Who roundup! Every Friday morning we collect random/cool Doctor Who-related news and things that we’ve found in our internet travels. Feel free to point out your own finds in the comments!

This week, we open with a Dalek poetry reading:

In Doctor Who news:

Lauren Ambrose cast in Torchwood: Miracle Day1.) This is a record-screecher for Torchwood and Six Feet Under fans; Lauren Ambrose has officially joined the cast for Torchwood: Miracle Day. According to Entertainment Weekly, our favorite mortuary’s daughter, Claire Fisher, will play “Jilly Kitzinger—a sweet-talking PR genius with a heart of stone who’s just cornered the most important client of her career … and maybe of all time.” She’ll be featured in a majority of the episodes.

2.) Torchwood: Miracle Day has started filming this week, as well. You can read which cast members were spotted at Gallifrey News Base. (Spoilers, naturally.)

3.) Toy company Bif Bang Pow will be releasing a set of Doctor Who bobbleheads, to debut at the New York Toy Fair in mid-February. The company already manufactures toys based on a great handful of genre television, including The Venture Bros. Dexter, LOST, The Twilight Zone, and...Californication? (Wait, what?)

On to the cool stuff!

David Tennant and Karen Gillan Radio Times

1.) Popular British media magazine Radio Times recently held a party with the various folks they’ve featured on their covers, which lead to this opportune pic (at right) with Tenth Doctor Charlie Sheen David Tennant and current Companion Karen Gillan hamming it up.

2.) Bombshell! Doctor Who and Rugrats exist within the same universe! Or...they might, thanks to the canny eyes at Geeky Girls. They were recently re-watching the first episode of Rugrats season two, ”Toy Palace," and spotted Dalek toys.

3.) Speaking of babies, writer Jennifer Mateo and her husband recently constructed a baby TARDIS for their child. Check out pics at the link. [link via io9]

4.) Ever thought the Doctor Who theme music could stand to be a little (okay, a lot) weirder? Check out this rendition of it utilizing solely catgut instruments by string quartet FourPlay (first track). Warning: Will put you in a weird headspace.

5.) TeeFury’s daily tee on the 17th depicted a bot battle aftermath including our favorite pepper pots. SPOILER: The Dalek wins. (Bender noooo!) [link via Daily P.O.P.]

Finally, happy birthday to Fourth Doctor Tom Baker, who turned 77 on January 20th! (Oddly enough, Doctor Who is currently filming its 777th episode, which is the 7th episode of the upcoming season. Ooooweeeeooooooh!)

We wish Baker many happy returns. Both with and without the aid of finicky phone boxes.

So happy to hear the news about Lauren Ambrose joining Torchwood. I've always liked her as an actress, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she brings to the Torchwood universe. :)

And that is AWESOME about Rugrats! I knew I liked that show for a reason! :)

If you're looking for cool Who-related stuff, here's a cgi Dalek comic from some years ago, the detail in which has always boggled me. And there's a *lot* of pages:

1.) Popular British SF media magazine Radio Times

Should probably say that his is incorrect; the RT is just a standard weekly TV/film/radio magazine.

Thanks, politeruin, we'll correct that bit. Our only exposure to RT has been because of SF, so I imagine that's where that association came from.
