Upcoming Science Fiction/Fantasy Events in February

Gallifrey One Catch 22 conventionIf there’s anything science fiction readers and watchers, gamers and otakus enjoy more than their particular hobbies, it’s getting together to talk with like minded people. Doing so on is great, as is doing it in person.

What follows is a list of some of the events that will happen over the month of February. It in no means tries to be comprehensive, but I do try for geographical and thematic variety. Feel free to add events near you, large or small, in the comments.

Boston, MA, Feb 18-20
One of Boskone’s traditional events is a play on Saturday evening. This year’s presentation is “Giant’s Tooth,” based on a story by Bruce Coville. The evening will start with a performance by Featured Filker Erica Neely.

Gallifrey One’s Catch 22

Los Angeles, CA, Feb 18-20
Gallifrey One is undoubtedly the convention for Doctor Who fans. People come from all over the world (perhaps even all over time) to celebrate one of the best TV show the genre has produced.

Wicked Winter Renaissance Faire

Somerset, NJ, Feb. 18-20
While the name may imply this is a Renaissance faire, it steps a bit further and bills itself as an event for all sorts of geeks and fans, from Renaissance to goth, with some steampunk and more thrown in for fun. This year’s theme: “The Fairy Tale War is over… and nobody won.”

Auckland, New Zealand, Feb 19-20
The gaming convention in “Middle-earth,” Battlecry features everything from boardgames to LARPing. This year’s edition also features Ink Forge, an area where artists get to show off their work and take commissions.

René Walling is a fan of SF, animation and comics, this has led him to co-chair Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon, be involved with fps magazine for more than a decade, write reviews of francophone short fiction for The Portal, and start Nanopress, a Canadian small press. He looks forward to living on Mars where he would benefit from having more than 24 hours in a day.
