More Awe-Inspiring Supercell (or Highstorm?) Photos

Sean Heavey supercell photo

You or may not have seen the above picture circulating around the internet this week. What you’re looking at is a supercell thunderstorm over Montana (appropriately famed for its “Big Sky”), the kind that birth scores of tornadoes.

Or you might be looking at a real world version of a highstorm from Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings. The kind that strips a man free of his skin. (Illustrated here by Michael Whelan.)

The picture was captured by electrician Sean Heavey in July, west of Glasgow, Montana. The above photo itself is actually three separate ones stitched together and, as one might surmise, there’s a lot more where that came from!

Check out this gallery at The Daily Mail for more of Heavey’s shots, including an amazing one of an angry sun punching through the storm. Breathtaking stuff.

Funny story: I actually signed up for Twitter for the purpose of tweeting this pic to Brandon Sanderson on November 23rd. Sadly I didn't get a reply. :(

That photo has got to be one of the coolest things I've seen!

lmelior - You know he gets about a thousand Tweets, Emails, and Facebook messages a day, right? Cool but kind of sad, too. Your chances of getting a reply are pretty slim.

Yep, I knew better than to hope for one. I figure whatever is at the top of his list when he checks it gets the replies.

Anyway, such an awesome picture.

Is Fred Flintstone standing in that field? Looks like a localized shower to me.
