Upcoming Events in December

KomiketIf there’s anything science fiction readers and watchers, gamers and otakus enjoy more than their particular hobbies, it’s getting together to talk with like minded people. Doing so on Tor.com is great, as is doing it in person.

What follows is a list of some of the events that will happen over the month of December. It in no means tries to be comprehensive, but I do try for geographical and thematic variety. Feel free to add events near you, large or small, in the comments.

Les Sommets du cinéma d’animation de MontréalLes Sommets du cinéma d’animation de Montréal
Montréal, QC, Dec. 2-5

The Cinémathèque Québécoise is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in North America and every year at the beginning of December they host the Montréal animation cinema summits. Screenings include a retrospective of Koji Yamamura’s films and Waking Sleeping Beauty, a documentary on the Disney Studio’s difficulties in the 80s.

Smofcon 28
San Jose, CA, Dec. 3-5

Ever wonder what convention organizers do when they’re not running conventions? They attend conventions of course! This one is about how to run conventions and is the place to be to learn all about what should (and shouldn’t) happen behind the scenes.

KomiketWinter Komiket
Tokyo, Japan, Dec. 29-31

The biggest gathering of fans in the world, the Komiket (aka the Comic Market) will welcome half a million fans who will converge on thousands of creators of Dōjinshi, amateur publications of manga. If you can’t make it to Tokyo right now, there’s always one in the summer too.

René Walling is a fan of SF, animation and comics, this has led him to co-chair Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon, be involved with fps magazine for more than a decade, and start Nanopress, a Canadian small press. He looks forward to living on Mars where he would benefit from having more than 24 hours in a day.
