xkcd’s Updated Map of Online Communities

A few months ago, I blogged about Flowtown’s attempt to revamp Randall Munroe’s original Map of Online Communities, first published in May, 2007, by creating the 2010 Social Networking Map. While it was interesting to compare the two versions, the newer map left something to be desired; in the comments, readers debated the shift in terminology from “online communities” to “social networks” and the omission of communities like 4chan, Fark, Reddit, Digg, and QQ, among others. Happily, Munroe has reclaimed his title as Official Cartographer of the Interwebs with a new and wondrous update of his own...Rather than expound at length upon its awesomeness, I’ll just post it here and let the LOLs commence:

Check out the giant version of the map here, and for the record: I love xkcd so much.

Bridget McGovern has definitely traveled through the harrowing Plains of Awkwardly Public Family Interactions, and would rather face a night swim through troll-infested waters.

Two things made me actually laugh out loud:

1- the shape of 4chan Island (and in the context of the shape, where /b/ is located)

2 - the location of the Island of Privacy Settings in northern Facebookland

I'm SO jealous of Munroe's mad map making skills. Plus, xkcd is pretty great in and of itself.

A great map, but I was surprised to see in naming water features The Pirate Bay (and other similar P2P services on land) didn't get a mention somewhere...

wait, it's missing the alt text! The best part!

"Best trivia I learned while working on this: 'Man, Farmville is so huge! Do you realize it's the second-biggest browser-based social-networking-centered farming game in the WORLD?' Then you wait for the listener to do a double-take.

Oh Randall Monroe, you filthy little genius, you.

Did I miss it? Where is lj?

And I love this!! Although I guess it's a sign of my diminished online activity in recent years that this map is much more foreign to me than the original.

And I didn't see Fark - did that make the map? Should be near 4chan but I didn't see it.

LJ is off the Bay of Drama. Near the Sea of Opinions. Recently conquered by the Russians.

RobMRobm @8--Fark is to the left of 4chan, between Reddit and YTMND, above the Sea of Memes :) I'm actually having trouble finding Something Awful anywhere, though...

Something Awful is in the mini-map of forums, bottom left, with its own island above the JLA forums.

Surprised he didn't group the Gawker Media sites together but Twitter Island is nothing but A+++.

I really like the updated map, but can we please stop using "interweb," "intertube," and all the rest of the lame nicknames for the internet? It was funny, once, then quickly went downhill to annoying. I have a feeling that it will continue to slide, even plummet, into aggravating and stupid.

Aha, there lj is! Thanks, cranscape. I knew it had to be on there somewhere. Seeing as it(alright, facebook too) is the only social site I'm a member of, I was afraid it'd slipped into the abyss of obscurity.

@11--I see! Thanks, Chris!

@necrosage--I'm specifically referencing Munroe's own use/take on those terms here (actually, I originally wrote "interblags,: but figured people who aren't regular xkcd readers might not be aware of the term). Generally speaking, the nicknames don't particularly bother me--at least not in the context of xkcd's general goofiness.

This is perfect. I like the scope of this in relation to emails and just plain talking/cell phones. It is good to see some of the minor sites I actually belong to listed here as I am still not on Facebook.

Did XBox 360 live list anywhere here? My buddy lives on Halo and the online gaming community there.

Loved the area devoted to WoW. Heh.

Well done:)

DPZora @ 17: It's there! I think it was only visible after I clicked through from the original comic to the expanded image.

(Also, I was so happy to see Dreamwidth on there! We have our own little island right next to LiveJournal. :-)

Oh my goodness gracious. Halfway down the left side, in the Wasteland of Failed Social Networks, there are two tiny lumps, presumably vast and trunkless legs of stone, and:

Friend of Friends"

Thanks for letting me know about that since I've never heard of xkcd before this map and will probably never go back to his site. I'm just saying that because many people online think it cute or funny. It used to be slightly amuzing once upon a time. Now its just gotten tired and old after these last few years. Honestly, if it wasn't even for The Daily Show making fun of the politicians that said it most people wouldn't even know about the mistakes that they said.
