Upcoming SF Events in September

If there’s anything SF readers and watchers, gamers and otakus enjoy more than reading, watching and gaming, it’s getting together to talk and exchange ideas with like minded people. Doing so on tor.com is great, as is doing it in person.

What follows is a list of some of the events that will happen over the month of September. It in no means tries to be comprehensive, but I do try for geographical and thematic variety.

Aussiecon 4, the 68th World Science Fiction Convention
Melbourne, Australia, Sept. 2-6

People from all over the world will congregate for five days of panels, workshops and presentations. Look for the Guests of Honor (Kim Stanley Robinson, Shaun Tan and Robin Johnson) or any of the other writers, artists and cool people who will attend, see the Hugo Awards ceremony hosted by Garth Nix or attend the AHWA’s Nightmare Ball.

DragonCon
Atlanta, GA, Sept. 3-6

DragonCon is one of the biggest SF events in the U.S. and features something for any SF fan: cosplay, gaming, panels, a guest list featuring authors, actors and artists from all over and more. The place to be on Labor Day weekend if Worldcon is too far for your budget this year. You’ll even be able to watch the Hugo Awards live over breakfast with some of the nominees.

Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival
Strasbourg, France, Sept. 14-19

The festival will kickoff a few days early with the 2nd Great Strasbourg Zombie Walk. Films to be screened include The Last Exorcism, Suck, The Shock Labyrinth: Extreme 3D, Beyond Re-Animator. There’s a special “Star Wars without Star Wars night” with special double features, uh, featuring The People vs. George Lucas and Fanboys. The festival will also have a retrospective of Val Lewton’s films.

Small Press Expo (SPX)
Bethesda, MD, Sept. 11-12

An event focusing on Independent Cartooning and Comics, attendees get to vote on the Ignatz Awards and attend the Awards ceremony. Definitively the place to be if you want something different than superhero comics or shoujo manga. For the first time, this year’s edition also features an animation showcase.

BrickCon 2010
Seattle, WA, Sept. 30 - Oct. 3

See some of the most amazing Lego constructions built by hobbyists from around the world. Go either for the whole convention to build your own, or simply visit the Public Exhibit on the weekend to see other’s creations.

Feel free to add events that are happening this month, large or small, in the comments.

René Walling is a fan of SF, animation and comics, this has led him to co-chair Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon, be involved with fps magazine for more than a decade, and start Nanopress, a Canadian small press. He looks forward to living on Mars where he would benefit from having more than 24 hours in a day.

Denver, CO,
Sept 10-12

Denver's Premiere Anime Convention, with something like 6-7 thousand guests. It's pretty darn big.

Note regarding the "Watch the Hugo Awards Live" item about Dragon*Con that is probably is not a live audio/video feed from Australia, but is the live text coverage of the results as they are being tweeted and otherwise covered by text devices. I think it unlikely that live video is going to make it to the D*C event.

As the organizer of the Live Hugo Results Breakfast at Dragon*Con, I can say definitively you will not be able to watch the Hugos live at the breakfast.

Many of the nominees will be there, and we will be receiving results live via twitter, phone and text - there may be someone at the Ceremony streaming live audio or video, and if that happens we will attempt to capture it on a pc.

But please don't show up thinking we're going to be projecting live video onto a bigscreen - that is not the plan.

If you want to hang out with some of the nominees, eat breakfast, and wait for the results to come 9in, then please join us. For details, see
