SciFi Airshow Taunts Us With the Real Thing

An artist friend sent me this link to Bill George’s Sci-Fi Airshow last night with a “must see” in the subject line. As an Air Force brat it brought back fond memories of sunburns, hotdogs, and long “Thunderbirds vs. Blue Angels” arguments. What I love about George’s faux Airshow, (besides spaceships!) is the harsh summer shadows. Seeing them, I am instantly nine years old, wearing a plastic and terrycloth visor, trying to take a squinty-eye look up at Starbuck’s Viper.

Irene Gallo’s dad has a funny story about flying with a Thunderbird as his wingman.

Blue's all the way! T-Birds fly too high and too far apart.

Shamefully, as a kid I liked Blue Angels because the little metal airplane toys were that deep blue color. ;-)

Navy brats only discussed how much better the Blue Angels were. :)

No matter how flat broke my wife and I were as grad students back in Ohio (you could barely make the rent on a summer stipend!) we always managed to scrape up enough to go to the Dayton Air Show. Once they had the first public display of the F-117 "Stealth Fighter"--surrounded by armed guards so no one could get too close. The jet intakes and exhausts were covered up to protect their stealthy secrets. Not exactly the Sci-Fi Airshow but about as close as mere mortals can get.

PS: I got to go Blue Angle since my son is doing Navy Jr. ROTC in high school.
