A Cory Doctorow giveaway!

No, we are not giving away Cory Doctorow but, we are giving away some Cory coolness. For those not lucky enough to catch him on his For the Win tour, we are offering three chances to win a signed copy of For the Win and a signed pack of the Makers tile game cards. One lucky reader will win copies of Little Brother and Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town in addition to For the Win.

What are Makers tile-game cards? In incredible 81-in-1 illustration from our friends at Idiots Books that can be flip, twisted, turned, and stacked into seemingly endless ways:

To be eligble to win, you must post a comment on our Facebook feed or @reply us on Twitter by noon EST on Thursday, 6/24. You can enter once each on Twitter and Facebook, but duplicate replies on either site won't count. One prize will go to a Facebook entry and one to a Twitter entry, and we'll flip a coin to see which site gets the grand prize.

The three winners will be chosen randomly and contacted through their respective sites, so check your @replies and Facebook inboxes by Friday, 6/25 to claim your prize. If we don't hear back from you within 24 hours, another winner will be chosen.

Comments on this post will be enjoyed but not included in the giveaway entries!

I'm guessing your facebook is listed as "Tor Books"? You know there's also a page listed for "Tor.com"? I don't know if there are others.

I'm guessing someone forgot to set an end date for this before it got posted. ;-)

How YA are these books? I've been trying to find something for my 3rd grader to read that isn't dumbed down too far, but isn't LOTR or some such.

Is it open for everyone globally, or is it geographically restricted in any way? (Have entered too many contests and giveaways only to find out it was US only..)

yeah, same question from me too.
I'm in the UK and want to enter also.

Beren: Little Brother is definitely Young Adult, but maybe advanced for a 3rd grader depending on their actual reading level (I think both Little Brother and For The Win are advertised as being at a 10th grade level). It is definitely not dumbed down in any way. If I didn't know better I'd swear Cory was a few decades younger than he is; he does capture the younger voice rather well.

JamesMcG: Thanks. For comparison, he's read the Harry Potter books up to the third one (Chamber? Prisoner? Can't be bothered to look it up right now) and liked them. I'm looking for something a little more SF and a little less Fantasy for him.

I say give the kid the books. If he likes them, he'll read them! (When I was a wee lass, my folks gave me their hand-me-downs. They didn't even bother to look for YA, so you're already full of teh win.) Also: you'll be able to read them yourself. Yay! (Cory's YA is really readable.)

Also, it would be way cooler if we could win Cory Doctorow himself. Is there a contest for that coming up any time soon? :-)

It would be great to get a signed copy of "for The Win" as I totally geeked out when I saw Cory's signature on the wall in Powell's Bookstore in Portland OR.

I was really impressed by Doctorow's incorporation of ARGs and LARPing in LITTLE BROTHER, I can only imagine his use of gold farming in FOR THE WIN is just as educational/entertaining.

...and a signed copy would totally rock my world!

Beren, I gave my son a copy of "Little Brother" when it came out. He was in 6th grade at the time. When he was done, he asked me why I gave him a book with adult situations. I read it and there is a rather descriptive sex scene (at least they used a condom). There's also a scene involving high-schoolers drinking at a beach party. I would definitely suggest waiting at least until middle school before handing it over.

On the other hand, I do recommend "Little Brother" to every teen and adult I know. I really love its message and thought that the message was more important than two objectionable scenes. It's also one of the best books I've read. I put it up there with "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Beloved". However, I don't think it's a good choice for a third grader.

Has there ever, in the history of user interface design, ever been a greater abortion than Facebook? I swear to any gods that might be listening, it is absolute and complete crap. Every single time I want to post a message or anything to anyone, it takes me forever to figure out how to go about it.

So I click on the link above, I sign in, and there's simply no indication of how I'm meant to post a comment on the Wall. Nothing.

Or is this, as was implied in the comment thread above, some sort of US-only-what-do-you-mean-we're-not-the-entire-planet thing?

NomadUK: as stated above, anyone anywhere is eligible.

(Although I agree that Facebook is the opposite of intuitive.)

Sweet jesus. I have to 'like' Tor.com to post on its Wall.

Can we please not ever do this on Facebook again?

So, if you want to win you have to post on face book?
