Happy Towel Day

In the spring of my senior year of college, I went through an insomniac phase. Hope springs eternal, so I lay down in the dark every night, but staring at the ceiling for four hours proved torturous—duh—and I turned to audiobooks for distraction. I burned through Coraline in two nights. A Wrinkle in Time took three. Derek Jacobi read me Sherlock Holmes for a week, and the Harry Potter series almost lasted through finals, but my strongest audio memories from that semester are of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, read by Stephen Fry.

I had been a casual Adams fan for years, much as any well-rounded geek might be, but something about Stephen Fry’s smooth, plummy voice, tripping blithely from absurdity to absurdity, suited my sleep-deprived mental landscape and, infinite improbability of improbabilities, banished the tedium. I’m not a great rereader, rewatcher, or relistener, but when Hitchhiker ended, I put it on again. And again. And eventually I found myself drifting off earlier every night; maybe my subconscious was trying to spare another go-round of the Vogon poetry reading?

Whatever the reason, as as an addendum to the fun I’ve had over the years finding ways to work a towel into my ensemble, I’d like to take this Towel Day to remember that rekindled affection for Douglas Adams’ wonderful, whacky galaxy, and say—what else?—thanks for all the fish.

Megan Messinger is sleeping much better these days, thank you.

Douglas Adams changed my life in so many ways, the start of which was reading the H2G2 5 (or 6, now) book trilogy. My first tattoo was a "42". But as much as I love H2G2, "Last Chance To See" is my all time fave of his works, with "The Meaning of Liff" as a close second.

I can never decide if I like the Dirk Gently series more than H2G2; I'm always flipping back and forth between Arthur Dent and Svlad Cjelli, between Fenchurch and Kate Schechter as my fave characters :)

You have made my day with the knowledge that Stephen Fry narrates the books. I am so incredibly excited about that fact.

Because of Douglas, there is one thing I never forget when traveling.

I haven't heard this version - I imagine Stephen Fry is a great narrator for it - but I also recommend the BBC radio series with a full cast. The first two pre-date the books and are similar, but not the same. The last three were done fairly recently and are faithful to the books.

The BBC also did a recording of Dirk Gently a couple of years ago. I've not read the book, but the radio series was great.

I used to listen to this in the car, but I had to stop when my laughing was getting in the way of my driving.

I didn't really need that front bumper anyway.

While I do like Stephen Fry, I heartily recommend the audiobook versions of H2G2 read by Douglas himself. Unlike most authors, he is also a performer and does a great job with the books.

Runaway Penguin, you can hear a sample of Stephen Fry's reading here on Audible. It's nice and long, and of the first chapter, which might be my favorite part. "Yellow..."
