Charles Vess’ Drawing Down the Moon (and giveaway!)

Drawing Down the Moon, Charles VessForget dispassionate critical opinions. I love Charles Vess’ artwork and I love Charlie. Of course the drawings are enchanting but, the real power comes from how complete his worlds feel. Delightful but not without there own dangers. Add to that his level of detail and atmosphere, and you get the sense that he is simply reporting the world as he sees it...And I’m more than a little bit envious of that.

Drawing Down the Moon is a magnificent mid-career retrospective. Two hundred pages beautifully printed on quality paper and, best of all, large images (like every art book should be, and too rarely is.)

The most exciting part? As fantastic as it is, given the work seen in Instructions (only their latest New York Times bestseller—congrats, Charles and Neil!), and other recent paintings, I bet the best is yet to come.

Now for the giveaway part! I asked Charles if he would do a quick drawing in a copy to give a lucky Tor.com reader...

Drawing Down the Moon, signed by Charles Vess

The Rules: To be entered to win, all you have to do to is comment below (once; duplicates won't count) before noon EST on Thursday, May 20th. We’ll pick a name at random. (If you want to be cool, you can name a favorite artist or two in your comment. Or a particular painting you enjoy. No, you don’t have to. It won’t affect your chances of winning, and we won’t think worse of you...not much worse, anyway. )

If you don’t happen to luck-out and are a bit leery of ordering art books online only to discover tiny thumbnail images in a sea of pontificating type (oops, was I ranting again?), here’s a quick flip through:

My favorite non-living artist is Watteau - I discovered his art while I was working at an opera company that was using some of his work in their programs, and I fell in love with it.

I've been excited about this book for a while. I can't pick a fav artist (or even a short list!) but I did just enjoy a whole lot of Sargent in Boston recently. I also love the Jon Foster covers you promote. I wish he did more because they always make me pick books up! :)

I remember that we had a Vess illustrated comic book at my parents' house when I was a kid, maybe 5 or 6 years old. I would always flip through it and look at the images. I remember the pictures more than the story, so I couldn't tell you which comic is was. Always loved his work, though.

I like pretty pictures!

I grew up on Arthur Rackham, Howard Pyle, and H. J. Ford's illustrations of fairy tales, and still love them best. Living fantasy artists? Probably James Jean.

I'll always buy anything Vess illustrates, though.

Oh, gorgeous!

I never think of myself as an art person, so it always surprises me when I'm asked to name a favorite artist and I can't decide. Another vote for Ursula Vernon; as soon as I move, I'm decorating my new bathroom in a Surprised Pink Lizard motif. I'm a huge fan of Mike Mignola, too.
Jen Tetzloff

Charles Vess is a master. I've been a fan ever since I first read Stardust, and he just keeps getting better and better.

So hard to name a favorite artist. Rackham did great things for fairy tales, I also love Shaun Tan and Dave McKean and Jon Foster. Special nod to Brett Helquist as well... I always end up buying books if he's done the cover.
Erika Amaya
52. brownjawa

Hi! Please enter me. I always felt that the only complete edition of Stardust was the first, with Charles Vess's illustrations.

Also, other favorite illustrators: Trina Schart Hyman (covers for Dealing With Dragons etc.), Cliff Nielsen (for the dragon books, The Merlin Conspiracy by DWJ and The Other Wind by UKL), Bjorn Berg (unless I mean Borg—one's a tennis player, one's an illustrator) for the illustrations for Astrid Lindgren's Emil books. I could go on and on.

At a Faeriecon, Vess talked about hinting at things which are outside the picture-- for example, a tree which isn't shown. I suspect he's hinting at more than that-- his work, especially the pen-and-ink drawings he does for story headings in the Datlow-Windling theme anthologies-- catch my eye in a way that I can't explain.

Please count me in.

Uhm, you said name "an artist or two"? Sargent, Whistler, Chase- the trifecta. Alphonse Mucha. Waterhouse, Millais, Edwin Austin Abbey, Bougereau(even sappy, he could paint). Francisco Goya and William Blake. Some of the Symbolists. Pyle, Wyeth, Rackham- 'nuff said. Way-clever Brit Charles Robinson- brilliant. Ed Binkley's fascinating. Ingrid Kallick, whose work is dark and charming like good fairy tales. Omar Rayyan, Eric Fortune, Jon Foster...Too much recent talent to mention them all. Have long enjoyed that Vess fellow, too, and appreciate his defense of the eraser.
