Announcing the Wheel of Time ebook artists for The Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos

Dan Dos Santos, Greg Manchess

I am excited to announce the next two Wheel of Time ebook artists: Dan Dos Santos will be tackling The Fires of Heaven, while Greg Manchess takes on Lord of Chaos.

Dan Dos SantosDan Dos Santos’ work can be seen on a number of bestselling fantasy books, including Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series and Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker. I love Dan’s work for his intense color schemes and great figure drawing. I know he’ll bring a lush and magical tone to The Wheel of Time.

“The first few artists have definitely set the bar high, and I’m honored to be considered among their ranks. I am equally honored to be entrusted with a cover which obviously holds so much importance to so many people. I hope that I somehow fleshed out the images they've had in their heads all these years. If I’m very lucky, maybe they’ll even walk away with something more than they imagined.” —Dan Dos Santos

Greg ManchessGreg Manchess’ work has appeared in National Geographic, Time Magazine, museum exhibits, and just about every venue from publishing, to film and advertising. I wanted to work with Greg on this series because I knew he could bring historical realism to Jordan’s epic fantasy setting.

“This assignment had me researching heavily into the Wheel of Time world, as I have not read the books. Happily, my first thumbnail-sketches were greeted with much enthusiasm. At the moment I am preparing the final sketch for the cover. It’s exciting to find so many fans willing to help me visualize places so familiar to them, and it’s an honor to be asked to paint it.” — Greg Manchess

You can get a glimpse of these two artists in the painting demo clips below:

The Warbreaker cover is very good. I am sure the WoT art will be very good and entirely different!

Excellent choices. For further books after that, I hope you consider Michael Komark (who's done the excellent WILD CARDS covers -- the Suicide Kings cover is especially awesome). And, obviously, if Michael Whelan could somehow be convinced to provide a cover ... but that's probable a pipe dream.

Should we start the prediction thread re what scene will be painted?

Especially given how well Dos Santos paints women, I'm expecting either Moiraine v. Lanfear at the ter'greal entrance or Birgitte shooting her arrow at Nyn at Valan Luca's circus.

Something Perrin like in Load of Choss.

I have loved the new artwork, and wish I could paste it on my existing paper copies.

In fact, that would be a cool thing - if Tor offers dust jackets for hardbound and paperback size prints, I will buy!

I think both artists are great. Although DKS' art is good it doesn't really match up with the books very often, so I'm glad that other people are also being given the chance to show what they can do for the series.

I'm a fan of dragons, and I really love the one at the top. Is it avaialbe anywhere as a wallpaper? I'd love to be able to use it.

Dan doesn't have that dragon available for a wallpaper but he has some others. Check them out here.

Irene, thank you very much! I really like all of them and will start using them immediately. I wish that I could be even half the artist that he is, but since I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler, I'll leave it to the people with talent.

I LOVE Dan Dos Santos! The cover of Warbreaker is probably one of my favorite SF book covers EVER.

So excited to see what he does with The Fires of Heaven. :D

I certainly hope that the covers more accurately portray the characters. While the original covers are great pieces of art, there were many flaws in the characters.
