George Mann’s The Affinity Bridge Giveaway!

Hello, Tor.commies!

In celebration of Steampunk Month here on Tor.com I’m delighted to announce our first giveaway. I have twenty (20) copies here of George Mann’s The Affinity Bridge, thanks to the good folks at Tor Books. Yes, twenty. Here’s the cover copy:

Welcome to the bizarre and dangerous world of Victorian London, a city teetering on the edge of revolution. Its people are ushering in a new era of technology, dazzled each day by unfamiliar inventions. Airships soar in the skies over the city, while ground trains rumble through the streets and clockwork automatons are programmed to carry out menial tasks in the offices of lawyers, policemen, and journalists.
But beneath this shiny veneer of progress lurks a sinister side.

Queen Victoria is kept alive by a primitive life-support system, while her agents, Sir Maurice Newbury and his delectable assistant Miss Veronica Hobbes, do battle with enemies of the crown, physical and supernatural. This time Newbury and Hobbes are called to investigate the wreckage of a crashed airship and its missing automaton pilot, while attempting to solve a string of strangulations attributed to a mysterious glowing policeman, and dealing with a zombie plague that is ravaging the slums of the capital.

Get ready to follow dazzling young writer George Mann to a London unlike any you've ever seen and into an adventure you will never forget...

Lou Anders just posted a review of the book, if you want to know what he thought.

The Rules: To get this giveaway, all you need to do is comment (once—duplicates won’t count) on this post. The winner will be selected at random. You have until noon EST on Thursday, October 8th, to comment here. Please check your e-mail on this day—you have 24 hours to respond before I select a new winner.

Torie Atkinson loves giving away free stuff. Good luck!

I just read the review of the book and was mildly crushed to find out it was a) a hardcover release and not really in my price range, and b) not acquired by my local library either. Sounds like a great book.

As usual, tor.com's munificence is appreciated.

I'm glad Steampunk is getting out there more. I am alos looking for Ghosts of Manhattan to be the logical next step for the sub-genre. What would you call Roaring 20s or Depression era Steampunk? Coalpunk? Oilpunk? We need a sub-subgenre.

For a rather different perspective - I've been really unimpressed by the two other books I have read by Mann - perhaps the third time will be the charm???

I ordered the trade paperback edition from Amazon UK a few months ago, because I couldn't wait for the US release. The book was well worth the little extra in shipping to get it. I cannot recommend this book enough. It couples the best of steampunk, zombies, and mystery. And best of all it is very well written. Which is something that is lacking occasionally in this type of fiction. Definitely looking forward to getting this in hardback one way or another.

When I cranked up my difference engine this morning, I was delighted to see that Tor dot Com was highlighting the current leading edge in scientific research. But then my eyes went wide at what I saw on my phlogeston powered viewing window - a free book? Huzzah! Although I understand that this book is being given away entirely at random, I am sure that I am blessed by Providence, because I am clearly a superior specimen of the human animal, and so I fully expect to receive word shortly of my victory in this.

I've already commented on Lou's review:
(I'm mostly go for "old" classic Sci-Fi like Vance or Dick, but your review awoke my interest for Steampunk.
I have at copy at home (on the still to read pile)of "The Difference Engine" that I just started reading. After that one I will certainly give "The Affinity Bridge" a try.)
Hope this won't be counted as a dubble entry.
Would love to get the book to Italy.

Sherlock Holmes pastiche plus Steampunk, with favorable comparisons to the X-files and Dr. Who! I definitely need to read this one ... although it does seem to be sorely lacking in the super-intelligent gorilla division.

I'm really happy to see the rise of the Steampunk movement on many fronts, not least of all is literary!

It's a rise in paying attention to minutiae, in taking delight in decoration, a move away from the spartan and over-utilitarian modern day, a rejection of the simple as always-better.

Huzzah!

Dear Lady Atkinson,

please excuse my humble inquiry, but I am quite perplexed at what you are referring to as an 'e-mail'?

Is it simply an abbreviation for 'electric mail' (whereas the content of a letter may be transmitted by telegraph,) or a new and ingenious invention I have unfortunately missed?

I would be very grateful for any clarification you could give me regarding this matter and remain

Yours Sincerely,
D. S. Kilgore
Comrade Matt

Greetings, Lady Atkinson

As per our previous correspondence, I am sending to you my current port of call for the 'Skylark' by Expedited Mail.

The mail packet zeppelin that shall carry this letter on the morrow has good engines and clean lines, and so I have every expectation that this letter, and any response on your part, should occur before I must once more set the Skylarks nose skyward once more.

When next in your metropolis, I can but hope that you should find time for a trip to the mountains, as I have overflown several lakes that promise excellent fishing.

As ever, your servant..
