An apology to David Malki

Tor.com would like to formally apologize to David Malki, the brilliant and talented creator behind Wondermark. Last week we put up a post using both the title and image from his gloriously steampunk T-shirt design, without attribution or permission. This was absolutely and completely wrong.  We will be purchasing the license to use the image, and are deeply sorry to Mr. Malki for our disrespectful action.

Now that is how to do a public apology. Good show.

I'd also like to apologize to David and tor.com, as I was the author of the post in question.

It was not my intention to use that piece of artwork without permission or giving proper credits. I simply found it in an image search. I was so excited that it had the title of my article in the design, that I didn't take the time to stop and track down who the artist was and give them proper credit.

Again, my sincerest apologies to all involved.

Hang on a second: there's an official apology from the management, a personal apology from the author himself, people doing things right... where was the outrage? the DMCA notices? the consumerist.com story? I'm confused - aren't those things required before apologies are issued? ;-)

In all seriousness, though - this is a class act here, it's so refreshing to see people and companies own up to mistakes and make things right rather than sending the attack lawyers after each other and deny, deny, deny. Well done indeed.

Good on you. Accidents happen, integrity makes things right. Awesome to see.

This shocked me. Pure, undistilled class coming from the internet? I wish all websites would be like this.

I applaud both Tor and Vernian Process for apologizing of their own volition. I'd also like to thank Vernian Process for posting the original link to Wondermark--I had been trying to remember the name of that comic for months now...so...thanks for allowing me to soak up the wonderful hilarity of steampunk comics.

Besides the class act on both VernianProcess & Tor.com's parts...

Whoa, that's a shirt? I want to add that on my gift list... :)

Nice! I've already come to expect no less from Tor in terms of fair dealings and just community in general. Thanks for that.

And that shirt is seriously cool.
