A Game of Thrones Cast (Nearly) Complete!

HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s seminal A Song of Ice and Fire series (shooting title: A Game of Thrones) is set to begin production next week. I guess it’s good news that all but one or two roles are cast, then! (The search for an epic number of extras continues, with Martin himself putting out a call on his blog to interested parties. Note to skilled horse-riders who might be hanging around Belfast next week: things are looking up for you!)

Fan site The Tower of the Hand has an exhaustive list of Dramatis Personae up already, with a gorgeous cast gallery that gives a hint of the eye candy to come. I’m especially impressed with the casting of the Stark kids, who look like exactly the sort of genetic-lottery-winners that one would expect of the spawn of Sean Bean and Jennifer Ehle.

Lena Headey, a relatively A-list pick in this list of character actors, has been discussed before, but despite some misgivings I continue to hope she’ll pull through in the part. I’m less sure about Jamie Campbell Bower as Waymar Royce, only because of his blandtacular performance in Sweeney Todd and his questionable taste in being part of the Twilight Saga. Dude, you are on notice. Everyone else on this cast list: you’re good to go. Get to it!

Martin mentions there are still one or two castings left to be revealed, but if even Ros the Whore (a pilot-episode write-in extra) has already been cast, I’m guessing that the major arcana was settled on a while ago and they’re just rolling it out to sweeten the suspense.

What do you think? Is anyone just the way you’ve always imagined, or does someone’s casting break your heart like finding out Liv Tyler was Arwen?

Genevieve will watch almost anything with Sean Bean, Mark Addy, and Jennifer Ehle in it. She audits other graduates of Awesome British Actor Camp on her blog.

I`ve been following the casting process ever since i found out about the pilot and i have to say that so far it is looking pretty awesome. The most important characters have actors as close to resemblence as possible. I have to say though that Jenifer Ehle and Lena Headey will be interesting to watch just because the complexity that their characters possess. Also i think that Tamzyn Merchant definitely has the looks for Dany, but i am still not entirely convinced about her acting chops to pull the role through...But other than that things do seem quite good. Piter Dinklage was good in Narnia. I hope he will do the same good job here...Now we just have to wait and see what HBO makes with the great building blocks it has for this show.

OK, so I want to start by saying I love that this is being made.

As a big fan of the series (what's been written of it), I've been chomping at the bit for years waiting for ANYTHING more.

Now as for the casting, I have a few thoughts.
On the whole, I think the casting is pretty brilliant, but...

Dany is supposed to be 13 or 14 years old in the first book/season. Isn't Tamzyn (who fits the description of Dany perfectly, as far as looks go) a bit old to be playing a 13-14 year old girl?
It just raised a few questions for me.

Another thing is that Cercei and Jaime are supposed to be twins. I think HBO could have at least found an actor and actress who look a bit alike for those roles.
The family resemblance being put aside though, I am thrilled at both Lena and Nikolaj being cast for these roles, as I enjoyed watching them both in their earlier shows - shot-lived as they were.

And one final question... Where's Baby Rickon Stark? doesn't he have a role in this?

Overall, I am truly excited this is going through. I would love to see this coming through, and a fire lit under GRRM's ass to finish the series.
And I am very excited about the show in general, as I think this is one of the best book-series' ever.

I am still underwhelmed by the Jamie/Cersei casting. The Starks look good, though, so that's something. Waymar Royce? Isn't he around for three pages before becoming a midnight snack for the Others? I want Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, Targaryens, and Cleganes. I don't give a fig about Royce. And where's Sam?

Daenerys, Jon, and Robb are all being aged up 3 years or so to begin with. Ned is aged up 5 years, to 40. I assume they'll adjust the timeline of historic events to match this.

I'm pretty sure HBO did their very best to find the best possible actors for the role. Sometimes those aren't people who look like kissing cousins. That said, while Cersei and Jaime are supposed to be fairly similar, I think Headey and Coster-Waldau aren't out of the question as siblings, IMO.

Little Rickon would appear, but just as an extra right now, glimpsed in the background.

Only the pilot is being filmed, and it only covers around 9 or so chapters. Sam doesn't show up, nor any of the King's Landing crew (Barristan the Bold, Varys, Littlefinger, Renly) or the people on the Wall other than Benjen (Lord Commander Mormont, Maester Aemon, Donal Noye).

Maybe once this HBO stuff is over and done with, Martin will go back to writing A Dance With Dragons :-/

Break out the hair dye! Cersei and Jaime (and, um, Joffrey) MUST be blonde, remember?

Very interesting indeed. Not a fan of the Cersei choice nor the Khal Drogo choice but that's how it goes.

Would love to read the next book :P

Not really a fan of the Jamie and Drogo casting either, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they don't have to do much. (I think they'd have been better off casting complete unknowns than random TV people, but hey, maybe they're awesome actors when they have good writing to go on.)

If nothing else, it should be gorgeous - Rome had beautiful sets and lighting, and I have faith that GoT will be the same.
