Edd Cartier, 1914—2009

Edd Cartier

There has been a fair amount of loss in the arts this Christmas season. Sadly, Edd Cartier has also passed away on Christmas day. He was a highly regarded and influential artist from the 30s to the 60s, most famous for his work on The Shadow and John W. Campbell’s Astounding Stories. He had a humorous and fluid style, equally adept at seemingly effortless figure drawing, creature design, and hardware. He  showed us a future that was truly strange, maybe a little dangerous, but always fun.

So, um, did Edd work in the future so much that he actually moved there to save on travel? Or are the kids all using some new calendar where Christmas = New Years?

I came across his work in old back issues of the pulps. I really liked it, and am sorry he's gone.
