Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor?

From the department of "Huh?!" comes this snippet via Variety:

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct "Thor," the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010.

As plausible as it seems for the man who directed Hamlet to bring that oh-so melodramatic air to the son of Odin, given his previous roles, it seems an odd choice for the star. Although I could see him playing Thor....

I love Kenneth Branagh as much as -- ok, probably slightly more than -- the next person, but I do recognize that the man has no lips, and I've always pictured my thunder gods with. :-P

I must be missing something. The quote says he's directing (not starring). Also, I don't think I follow the distinction between starring in a Thor movie and playing Thor.

If you look at the list, he's directed a whole bunch of different sorts of things:

Sleuth
The Magic Flute
As You Like It
Love's Labours Lost
Hamlet
A Midwinter's Tale
Frankenstein
Much Ado About Nothing
Peter's Friends
Dead Again
Henry V

I haven't seen them all, or even half, but those I have seen, I've liked.

And if Ang Lee could direct a Hulk movie . . . .

Well, I'd trust Branagh more with Thor.

Hmmm...anybody remember "Adventures in Babysitting?" I loved it (as an 8 year old, at least); anyway, Vincent D'Onofrio plays a mechanic who's also a dead ringer for Thor (he even rocks the helmet at one point). What's crazy is that this was the same year as "Full Metal Jacket," in which he looked completely different. Anyway, Vinnie's been looking a tad rough lately from what I've seen on "Law and Order" commercials...I say let's give him the Thor role and see what happens. Even if he doesn't get back to the Chiseled Abs of Yore, between him and Branagh at least we're assured a pretty weird ride :)

JamesEnge @ 2 -- It's just that Branagh has rather conspicuously starred in several of the things he's directed (Hamlet, Henry V, Dead Again, Frankenstein, Much Ado, Love's Labours Lost), and I thought it would be amusing if this were also the case with Thor, as Pablo mentioned at the end of the post....

I hope this is true; I'd love to see what he'd do with a superhero story. Okay, I'm a squeeing Branagh fan girl, I admit it.

Hey thumbelinablues @ 6--

I see what you mean: he is a tad full of himself. (That was why he was so good as Benedick--almost typecasting.)

Um...I think he was more interesting with Emma to offset him. She, the skill and brains, he the looks and...um...something.

Perhaps as just a director, maybe he's ok? Can we try one?
