Sometimes We Feel Like the Girl on the Cover of Replica, Too

, || In Replica, sixteen-year-old Nadia Lake's marriage has been arranged with the most powerful family in the Corporate States. She lives a life of privilege even if she has to put up with paparazzi tracking her every move, every detail of her private life tabloid fodder. But her future is assured, as long as she can maintain her flawless public image—no easy feat when your betrothed is a notorious playboy. Nathaniel Hayes is the heir to the company that pioneered human replication: a technology that every state and every country in the world would kill to have. Except he's more interested in sneaking around the seedy underbelly of the state formerly known as New York than he is in learning to run his future company or courting his bride-to-be. She's not exactly his type…not that he can tell anyone that.

But with Dorothy in power, Nate and Nadia know their days are numbered. They have nowhere to run except the Basement, Paxco’s perilous and lawless slums. But Dorothy is far from content with driving her enemies into hiding. She wants them dead.

Sometimes We Feel Like the Girl on the Cover of Replica, Too

Some days we can’t help but compare ourselves to the girl on the cover of Jenna Black’s Replica, staring out wistfully over a shining New York City that we can only peer at through giant glass windows of an odd shape and size.

The book itself is out on July 16 from Tor Books, and contains a twist we don’t often see in a YA yarn, so you really shouldn’t miss it! But in the meantime, just stare at the cover with us. And relate.

NINE-TENTHS OF THE LAW

Jenna Black

Nothing good ever comes from private citizens visiting my office. Which was why I looked up from my pile of paper-work and scowled when a middle-aged couple stepped through my office door without knocking.

I guessed the man’s age at about fifty, though it was a well-preserved fifty. His neatly trimmed hair was a dark blond that camouflaged a hint of gray, and he had rounded apple cheeks that would always give him an aura of boyishness. The woman was considerably younger—late thirties, early forties—and beautiful enough to qualify for trophy-wife status. Both were impeccably dressed, and obviously tense.

“Are you Morgan Kingsley?” the woman asked tentatively, looking me up and down with a little frown tugging at the corners of her mouth. All right, I don’t dress like a corporate clone; so sue me. It was hot as hell out today, so I’d gone for a clingy camisole top and low-rise capris. Just as well Ms. Stick-up-her-ass couldn’t see the drugstore flip-flops that graced my feet.

“Yes,” I said, smiling tightly. “That’s me. What can I do for you?”

Fangs for Hire

We hope you enjoy this reprint, originally published in The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance, ed. Trisha Telep, Running Press, 2008.

I met my client at a seedy, unpleasant bar. Not because I liked such places, but because it’s what clients usually expect when they hire a hit man—or, in my case, a hit woman.

My nostrils flared as I opened the door and stepped inside. The place stank of stale beer, stale sweat, stale cigarettes, and stale lives. Even though it was late on a Saturday night, prime bar hour, the place was practically empty. As advertised by the Hogs parked outside, there were a handful of biker dudes and their slutty chicks hanging out at the pool table. At the bar itself, there were a couple of men who might as well have had Loser tattooed on their foreheads, both looking unhappily drunk.

Remind me why I chose this place for a rendezvous? Oh, yeah. The atmosphere.

I could smell my client from clear across the room. Not because he stank, but because he smelled like he’d had a shower within the last week, which was more than I could say of the other patrons of this fine establishment. Being a vampire has its advantages, but the enhanced sense of smell is something I would happily do without.

[The hit is on…]
