Francis Tsai is a freelance conceptual designer and illustrator who has worked in the entertainment industry since 1998 doing concept art, illustration and art direction for a variety of media: commercials, books, comics, and the occasional movie.
Francis’ college education was in physical chemistry, which is where he learned everything he knows about analytical chemistry and quantum mechanics. This actually came in handy on numerous occasions, particularly when he realized he didn't really like chemistry all that much. Francis then decided to get a graduate degree in architecture, which has proved a bit more useful. Architecture school provided a great foundation for working as a designer, and much of what he has learned since then is a result of self-education, learning from books and other artists, and generally taking part in the world-wide community of artists and entertainment design folks.
Currently he is working freelance full time with clients such as Marvel Comics, Wizards of the Coast, Upper Deck, MotionTheory and ImagineFX magazine and game developers such as Eidos, Namco, Midway and others. He is also putting together a book about fantasy art that is due to be published late next year.
