The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 74 and 75

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings reread Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com! The end is nigh! With this post we’ll be covering Chapters 74 and 75 leaving just the Epilogue to go. It has been a long journey for not only the characters of Roshar, but for all of us involved in this reread from myself and Carl down to the commenters and those of you that just like to lurk. We love you lurkers, too! But luckily this is only the beginning of a very long and sure to be well-loved series as Sanderson continues to up the ante and reveal more of the marvel of Roshar.

But before things end, I get to talk about Shallan’s realization of the implications of Jasnah’s research, and her new insights to the clandestine group known as the Ghostbloods. And Dalinar revists his first vision; he only just now understands what sort of message has been motivating him and leading him forward.

Now let’s meet a dead God...

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 70 and 71

Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. I can’t believe the end is in sight already. We’re in the home stretch, covering the first two chapters of Part 5: The Silence Above.

This week, Shallan deals with the repercussions of her actions up till now, and Szeth finds out who has been pulling his strings—it is quite a surprise for first time readers, and even with repeated readings it is still shocking that a man seen as so kindly could be otherwise. Then again a running theme to The Way of Kings is that nothing is necessarily as clear as it seems. Distance, point of view, and time all distort.

Now it’s time for Columbo—I mean—Shallan the Detective and the case of the melting bread!

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 68

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings reread Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. In the last chapter, Kaladin spoke “The Words” and changed the world, bringing back something that had been lost for ages.

This week we tackle the fallout from both that and Sadeas’s actions. Dalinar is stuck on the plateau, but Kaladin is coming for him come hell or Highstorm. And nothing stops Kaladin from his goals; once he sets his mind to something he gives it his all, even when confronted with the first Parshendi Shardbearer we see in action.

[Spin like the wind Kaladin!]

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 64 and 65

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Stormlight Archive reread Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. Last week we witnessed Kaladin change things up for the better, even if he put himself in even greater danger, which is saying something considering how much he risks his own life at every turn to save his men. This week we cover two (mostly) Dalinar focused chapters following all this Sadeas joint assault business. Let’s just say not everything’s coming up Dalinar.

Things will never be the same for Dalinar after this, and by extension Kaladin and perhaps even Alethi society itself. Well, hopefully Alethi society will change because if it doesn’t nothing but Damnation brought by the Voidbringers awaits them all. Odium would have nothing less.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 60 and 61

Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. We’re back after a short break so that all of you could dip into Words of Radiance, which hit #1 on the New York Times best-seller list during its first week of release! This is, I believe, Brandon’s first appearance at #1 for a non-Wheel of Time novel in the Adult category. Steelheart also hit #1 for the Young Adult category last year so he’s definitely on a roll. It is safe to say that there are plenty of Sanderson and Stormlight fans out there.

Currently, I still have not officially started Words of Radiance, but I’m going to crack before long. My plan of waiting until the reread is done just seems too far away and the closer we get to the end the more I NEED to know what happens next. So with that in mind I’m tackling two short chapters this week that both center on Dalinar. “That Which We Cannot Have” is an infuriating chapter where so much is teased but little is given in concrete answers, while in “Right For Wrong” Dalinar finally gets something to smile about: a girlfriend. Also, academia may be Dalinar’s savior. Isn’t that nice.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 58

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to the reread of The Way of Kings on Tor.com. We’re only two short weeks out from the release of Words of Radiance, and things will be ramping up a lot here on Tor.com as we approach the release—so stay tuned all you Roshar fans!

This week we cover chapter 58, which splits the point of view between Adolin and Dalinar again. We only get a few Adolin POV chapters and they’re usually interesting to ferret the inner workings of the camp, as Adolin likes to bop around a lot more than his father. Adolin finally comes to recognize the worth of what his father has done. Took him long enough. Dalinar is meanwhile discussing matters of state and philosophy with Sadeas and Elhokar.

[Pass the yellow wine, please.]

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 56

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. Things are moving fast and furious as we are less than a month away from the publication of Words of Radiance (check out the new Glimpses of Radiance feature), but before we reach that destination we need to finish the journey that is The Way of Kings.

This week we tackle just one chapter, though it is quite an important one. Two sides that are warring against each other within Dalinar. On one side is the Alethi Thrill that has been bred into him, which he no longer revels in. On the other is the influence his conscience and the codes have had upon him. Neither side seems to have the upper hand at the moment, but that will change as Dalinar steps into a new role. Only he has to get past Sadeas to do it. And after he saved Sadeas’s storming life!

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 53 and 54

Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here at Tor.com. Last week Dalinar and Adolin came back to the forefront of the story with one of the most memorable visions we’ve seen yet.

This week we tackle another sad episode in Kaladin’s life and Dalinar finally gets cleared—well sort of—in the case of the King and the slit girth.

[Not Dunny!]

The Way of Kings Reread: Interludes I-7, I-8, and I-9

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Stormlight Archive Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. We are now less than two months away from Words of Radiance! Carl has already had a chance to dip into it, but I may try to hold myself back until we finish the reread. Let’s see if I have that will power! And in case you missed it, the Prologue and first two chapters of Words of Radiance have been posted online here at Tor.com. And that first sentence of the Prologue is a doozy.

Just before Christmas Carl covered the last two chapters of Part 3, and that last chapter is still a killer to me every time I read it. Everything Kaladin ever felt about the lighteyes became true, and one of the few men Kaladin looked up to betrayed him utterly. I sure hope he pays for it in the future. This week we’ve reached the third and final set of Interludes and though they are very short chapters, two of them reveal much including tidbits on “The Old Magic” and something odd about the nature of spren. Szeth also gives us a very big glimpse of his true power.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 49

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. After this week’s post there are only two chapters left in Part 3, which we’ll tackle after a short break for the holidays.

Last week we saw Kabsal’s downfall, and now we’re going to cover Kaladin training the men of his bridge squad in the art of war—from the onset he’s doing it differently than most Alethi. He wants to instill in them what he sees as the most important attributes a soldier can have. Namely, he tries to teach them the importance caring about something and, let’s not forget, also how not to get pushed over. Like I said, important stuff.

Down into the chasm we go.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 47

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to this week’s installment of The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com! I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving break. I know I did. Also, be sure to check out Carl’s latest installment to The Stormlight Grimoire on becoming a Windrunner. He’s doing an amazing job getting into many facets of Roshar we’re most interested in.

As we near the last handful of chapters in Part Three of The Way of Kings things are really ramping up. Last week we went on a bit of a windride with Kaladin as he had his first storm vision. This week we take a step back to a scene we’re already familiar with, but from a different perspective. Chapter 47: Stormblessings covers the day that is perhaps Kaladin’s second greatest shame. The first being his loss of Tien, which he even reflects on during the course of Stormblessings, but what we finally see is how exactly Kaladin turned down what everyone else in Alethi society would considered the greatest honor: winning a Shardblade and Shardplate.

Now let’s take our trip in the Stormlight Not So Way Back Machine...

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapter 45

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com! Again we’ll just be tackling one chapter this week as there is a lot to dip into here. Last week we saw the imbalance of lighteyes versus darkeyes was at an all time high with Roshone hurting Lirin and his family as much as he could. Kaladin stepped-up and joined his young brother Tien in becoming a soldier, and as a result that would cement his future.

This week we follow that major event with another: Shallan’s visit to Shadesmar and the official unveiling of the symbolhead creatures. Get your Shardblades ready as we have a lot to mow down.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 42 and 43

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to the Tor.com reread of The Way of Kings, your weekly helping of all the Stormlight Archive conversation you can handle. Last week we saw how honest Kaladin’s father could be even when it would benefit him not to be, which is a bit of theme for all of The Way of Kings—that whole honor thing that Sanderson is rightly obsessed with.

This week we’re up to chapter 42 and 43. First up, Shallan hears a mysterious voice and ends up sharing some jam with Kabsal—it isn’t the jam she enjoys so much as the company. Meanwhile Kaladin’s mettle is tested yet again as he meets the new Brightlord in charge of the bridge crews. He also learns some very IMPORTANT words.

[Truthberry jam anyone?]

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 38 and 39

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread, here on Tor.com. This week’s chapters are all about enduring pains for two of our main characters. Kaladin is fighting for his life after the Highstorm incident, and master thief Shallan is dealing with some troubles of her own, as she is still reeling from what she witnessed during Jasnah’s not so little “lesson.” Even though Shallan is disconcerted she still has the wherewithal to concoct a plan against her brothers’ wishes to hopefully get away with her long sought and now stolen treasure.

It’s hard out there for a Surgebinder.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 34, 35, and 36

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. This week we’re covering chapters 34, 35, and 36; the first two are really just one chapter with no real break and for that reason I’ve also combined the commentary for chapters 34 and 35.

These are some monumental chapters in terms of importance to the narrative of both Kaladin and Shallan, and certainly live up to the section title: Dying. Kaladin must face a Highstorm to decide whether he lives to see another day. Shallan learns a very callous lesson from Jasnah and finally accomplishes her very long game.

[Be sure to carry a sphere in a Highstorm...]

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 31 and 32

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. This week’s chapters are interesting counterbalances in Kaladin’s life. In the first, Kaladin witnesses how cowardly and mean the town folk of Hearthstone can truly be, caused by a mere sentence from a Brighteyes and thus sowing his hatred of the upper class. Even with that unpleasantness, Lirin finally shows some backbone and basically tells a mob to “come at me, bro.” And in the second chapter, Kaladin’s plans come to fruition...

[Bridge up! And tilt!]

The Way of Kings Reread: Interludes I-4, I-5, and I-6

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. I can’t believe we’re already this far down the Stormlight hole with the second set of Interludes. You all were getting a little tired of being stuck on the Plains for the entirety of the last sections, weren’t you? I know I was! No matter how much I like Kaladin and Dalinar’s points of view, Roshar is a big and strange world that I love getting a chance to explore, which the interludes provide us. These are some very special chapters in which we learn some answers to basic questions like what is up with the Shin? Of course those answers don’t clear everything up, and just lead to more and more questions—and I think I have at least a few dozen questions after reading the Axies chapter. What a lovable weirdo.

The first interlude gives us a very brief look into life in Shinovar. In the second, we meet a cataloguer of spren—who is perhaps the most unique characters in The Way of Kings. Lastly, we catch up with Szeth, whose worst dream comes true.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 27 and 28

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to The Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com, your weekly fix of Roshar revelry. This week we reach the end of Part 2: The Illuminating Storms, which means we’re more than a third of the way through and approaching the halfway point quickly. Major events are happening in the lives of Kaladin and Dalinar. The first chapter takes us to the Kaladin’s breakthrough moment with the men of bridge four, which further solidifies many of them to his lead. With “Decision” Dalinar lets off some steam Shardbearer style while wrestling with one of the most important decisions of his life as a highprince of Alethkar.

[Horneater stew anyone?]

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 23 and 24

Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings Welcome back to the Way of Kings reread here on Tor.com. This week we cover chapters 23 and 24, which are rather quiet for the most part. Kaladin and his new coterie skulk around the Sadeas’ warcamp and reveal much about themselves. Well, at least Rock does. In the second chapter Dalinar plays diplomat with the launching of his daring and unpopular plan of the highprinces joining together for plateau runs. At the end Adolin finally speaks his mind to his father all too clearly for Dalinar’s liking.

Let’s go milk reeds with some crazy airsick lowlanders.

The Way of Kings Reread: Chapters 19 and 20

The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson, Stormlight Archive Welcome back to the Tor.com reread of The Way of Kings after our brief break for the 4th of July! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. This week we experience one of Dalinar’s visions for the first time, and learn quite a bit about the way things were in ancient Roshar—even if we don’t understand it all just yet. The second chapter is quite short, but focuses on an important event in Kaladin’s young life that sees him face his first failure as a surgeon as he struggles to save the life of a young girl. Kal is a tender soul no matter the age.
