Tor Books, the largest publisher of science fiction and fantasy in the world, has teamed up with SCI FI Channel, the channel that fuels the imagination, to bring their readers and fans the best of new science fiction and fantasy. Each month, one carefully selected Tor title will receive the SCI FI stamp of approval, which will appear on the spine and cover of the book. THE ROAD TO DUNE is the third Tor book to be included in the SCI FI essential books program.

Frank Herbert’s Dune was initially rejected by a number of publishers until Chilton Books took a chance and published it in 1965. Described as the science fiction equivalent of The Lord of the Rings, Dune won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards and over its 40 year history has become the best-selling science fiction novel of all time. Now, Tor Books is delighted to announce the publication of THE ROAD TO DUNE (A Tor Hardcover; September 6, 2005; $25.95), a companion to the original “Classic Dune” series, as well as its two prequel series, Prelude to Dune and Legends of Dune. Compiled by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and featuring writing discovered in Frank Herbert’s papers, THE ROAD TO DUNE is a treasure-trove of information—which no Dune fan will want to miss!

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have spent years lovingly reading and sorting through the numerous files left by Frank Herbert. They uncovered much of his private correspondence with legendary SF editor John Campbell, original notes for Dune and what would become its sequels, never-before-published chapters and articles written by Frank, and much more. A large portion of these findings, along with original introductions and short stories by Brian Herbert and

Kevin J. Anderson, have been collected for the first time in THE ROAD TO DUNE. The contents include:

  • “Spice Planet” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, a short story based on the detailed notes left by Frank Herbert;
  • “They Stopped the Moving Sands ” by Frank Herbert, the unpublished magazine article about sand dunes that planted the seed for Dune;
  • Correspondence between Frank Herbert and his agent, editors, and glimpses of the various rejection letters he received about Dune;
  • Unpublished chapters and scenes from Dune and Dune Messiah;
  • Scenes from Frank Herbert’s draft Dune film script;
  • Four original short stories by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson;
  • And much, much more

Although forty years have passed since Frank Herbert wrote his first Dune novel, the sands of time have not diminished the impact this powerful and groundbreaking epic has had on the evolution of SF—and millions of readers. THE ROAD TO DUNE is the perfect companion to any of the earlier books in the Dune universe, providing greater understanding of the world and its creator, Frank Herbert.
