Meet the Most Under-Appreciated Actor in Showbiz: The Human Lens Flare

human lens flare video funny J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness Star Wars: Episode VII Lorenzo Flarius

What—you didn’t think J.J. Abrams skimped and just used a lighting crew to produce all of those headache-inducing lens flares in the Star Trek movies, did you? He’s been nurturing the career of Lorenzo Flarius, a hot young talent whose unique look has earned him a spot in nearly every frame of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. Forget the recently-announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII—Lorenzo will be the biggest talent in the new trilogy.

[Betcha feel really bad for making fun of lens flares now, huh?]

J.J. Abrams, Star Wars Episode VII

So this is a thing we should probably all get on right now.

Ugh. This is not good, people. Not only do we know that Lucas was going to do Episode VII himself before Disney took over, and that he’s having regular council calls with J.J. Abrams—but now we’re just finding out that Michael Arndt is out as screenwriter.

Morning Roundup: Release the Adorable Kraken!

We’re guessing Liam Neeson wouldn’t be able to terrify Argos with this goofy multi-colored Kraken, but if he gets a role in Revenge of the Titans we might be willing to see it! The Kraken was one of the great villains of the Carta Marina, the earliest detailed map of Scandinavia and the surrounding seas, and features lovingly-drawn renditions of fantastical marine creatures, from Pristers and Polypus to the classic Sea Serpent. You can read more about the ancient map (and ogle more sea monsters) over at Wired!

Morning Roundup is still staggering through a post-“Ozymandias” landscape, but we’re doing our best. We have super-cute Marvel/DC team-ups, promises of alien contact, and news about the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Extravaganza!

[Oh, and a terrifying clown!]

S. J.J. Abrams Doug Dorst

Bleeding Cool has the scoop on just what that tricky little trailer released by Bad Robot yesterday amounts to; it was all a matter of matching the fonts of an advertisement to the trailer itself. And shockingly enough—it’s a book!

What Does This Mysterious New J.J. Abrams Video Tell Us, If Anything?

JJ Abrams Believe Stranger teaser video

Bad Robot just released a teaser video through their Twitter account, simply titled “Stranger.”

Is this a Star Wars Episode VII teaser? It does begin with a field of stars... Or does it have something to do with Abrams’ most well-known TV property Lost? The music is certainly evocative of the early ’00s show. Hell, maybe it’s even something to do with Star Trek 3.

[Or it could be...]

J.J. Abrams “Believes” John Williams Will Be Back for Star Wars: Episode VII

In a press conference in Germany for Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams was needled about his involvement in that other space franchise: Star Wars. While he didn’t reveal much (it seems he doesn’t know much) the director of both Star Trek Into Darkness and the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode VII did say John Williams would likely return.

“For ‘Star Wars,’ it’s every early days to know, but I believe that going forward, John Williams will be [scoring] that film...”

Though this isn’t total confirmation, it would make sense for the legendary composer return to a universe he arguably made more famous with his score.

Morning Roundup: Giant Head From Alternate Universe Where Rome Never Fell Shows Up in Hudson

This past Thursday a giant styrofoam head turned up in the Hudson River. Our suspicion is that it fell through from an alternate 2013 timeline where the Roman Empire never fell. (Or it’s detritus from a Mardi Gras float.) We’re probably right about this.

Morning Roundup: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams “a Pig.” Vows to Stop Him.

William Shatner calls J.J. Abrams a pig Vows to stop him.So, in this interview William Shatner calls J.J. Abrams a “pig.” This refers to J.J. apparently “hogging”everything like Star Trek, Star Wars and the eventual Sliders reboot. And though this is only a rumor we’ve invented, we’ve heard contemporary Shatner is teaming up with this 60’s Shatner (pictured here) in the Nexus to stop J.J. Abrams. His exact words: “come back with me, help me stop Abrams.”

J.J. Abrams, Star Wars, and the Homogenization of Geek Pop

J.J. Abrams and the Homogenization of Geek Pop

The cultural response about the appointment of J.J. Abrams to the director’s chair for Star Wars: Episode VII, seems to be a begrudging, quasi-unanimous “makes sense, I guess.” Yet I would argue that this sort of half-excited, half-confused shoulder shrug from pop culture pundits and geek commentators alike actually sums up exactly why the decision is so terrible. Yes, I admit it! J.J Abrams is a logical choice. But, the idea of Abrams helming Star Wars, while likely to produce a movie that’s visually tantalizing, is boring beyond belief, to the point of being soulless. I have no doubt that the J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII will be exciting, stunning, and palpitation-inducing. I’m also fairly confident that its texture and essence will be exactly like his other work, which leads to the bad news:

The J.J. Abrams Star Wars will be too well made.

Simon Pegg Denies Khan Rumors

Speaking to The Telegraph, Simon Pegg has denied the supposed “confirmation” that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing a new incarnation of Khan in the next Star Trek film. Straight from the article:

“It’s not Khan...replies Pegg, annoyed. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not.” and numerous other sources all reported on the news at the beginning of the month, though the “confirmation” of the villain being Khan was never coming from offical sources. Could this be actual misdirection, or Pegg genuinely clearing the air? Simon Pegg has a track record for calling things like they are, so our feeling is that this is true, and Khan is indeed NOT in the new film. In any case, this seems to be the first person actually involved with the new Trek film who has definitively answered the question.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Trailer Blows Up

The trailer for the new Mission Impossible film is here with the usual clusters of explosions. But this time it Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) in joined by new faces behind and in front of the camera. Simon Pegg is now part of the Impossible Mission Force, while the film itself is being directed by Brad Bird of The Incredibles. J.J. Abrams is still producing and it looks like Cruise himself is getting story credit. We think it looks like this one might be a more team-oriented movie, more in the spirit of the original show. But what do you think? Trailer below:
