In a post-Wimbledon BBC announcement, the actor to take ownership of the TARDIS on Peter Capaldi’s exit has been revealed: Jodie Whittaker!

The BBC has just announced that Jodie Whittaker–who has worked with upcoming showrunner Chris Chibnall on Broadchurch–will play the 13th Doctor.

Here is the video that the official BBC One Twitter account used to announce her casting…

A very clever ploy with the hood there, keeping her hair covered so that it’s harder to discern whether it was going to be a man or a woman. This is what Whittaker had to say following the announcement, according to the BBC:

“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”

Peter Capaldi’s final bow will take place in the 2017 Christmas Special, and we will meet Whittaker’s Doctor then as well.
