Last we heard, TriStar Pictures and The Jim Henson Company had closed a deal on a Labyrinth remake—not a reboot—to be written by Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Now, over a year later, comes an update: Fede Alvarez, who directed the well-received horror film Don’t Breathe, has been tapped to co-write the script with Jay Basu, with the story more of a spinoff than a remake.
Alvarez and Basu are currently working on (directing and writing, respectively) The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Sony Pictures’ adaptation of the fourth Lisbeth Salander novel. According to Deadline, once the duo turns their attention to the Labyrinth spinoff, they will “create a new story within the universe created in the original movie and that it is not a remake; indeed it sounds more like a spinoff than a sequel.” Jareth the Goblin King, David Bowie’s iconic character, will not appear in the movie. Lisa Henson will produce, while Nicole Brown will oversee for TriStar.
“Labyrinth is one of the seminal movies from my childhood that made me fall in love with filmmaking,” Alvarez told Deadline. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to expand on Jim Henson’s mesmerizing universe, and take a new generation of moviegoers back into the Labyrinth.”
So, what kinds of characters and adventures would you want to see in a Labyrinth spinoff?
